Ok so here's the deal, I want to develop the ability to do a side split but when I try the stretches needed my hips hurt. Now I know lots of people have this problem and have fixed it by either tilting their pelvis more or by performing hip mobility exercises but I've tried both and still no luck. It's not a stretching pain its a joint pain I fought through it a couple times and it just leads to my hips hurting for a couple days. I lift weights i have a pretty good leg routine including deadlifts squats etc. I also run 3 miles a day If that matters at all. I really want to do this I just need to know what I'm doing wrong please help thx.

Thx for the reply, but thats way past where I'm at right now my problem seems to be that I am not tilting my pelvis enough? I'm doing it as much as I can and it still hurts so if there are any other possibilities I'd really like to know.

This is a terrible video and not what you should be trying. It has injury written all over it for someone who isn't already hyper flexible.

Lol no worries I won't be trying that stuff for a long while. Im still trying to figure out how to position my hips so they don't hurt like a mofo.

Also, it's not that I completely stop when I get to that point I can go farther but my hip joints hurt super bad when I do. I've read hella pages and articles and forums and I cant seem to find an answer.

First off, welcome to MAP :)

Is the pain in the front or the side of your hips?

Lie on your side, then push with your fingers into the top of your hip. If it hurts a surprising amount then you probably don't have a joint problem but something else, such as an inflammation of the muscle that runs across the top of the hip.

Assuming you're good on that front, if anything it sounds like you're training your body to do one thing, so when you try to perform a different type of movement your body is weaker in that respect than it should be. You train your body for strength, it will become strong, but flexible is a whole different kettle of fish.

Carry on with mobility exercises such as fire hydrant exercises for good measure, but you might want to look at adding something like side planks into your exercise routine. Also if you look up Kelly Starrett's Mobility WOD and some of his other videos, he has some excellent advice that might help out. As always though, I gotta suggest swimming. In my eyes, swimming is one of the best exercises for helping with strength and flexibility you can get - alongside yoga. :)
