I'm having some issues with my current training, and am thinking about checking out some other martial arts and one of ones i'm interested in is JKD, so does anyone know any good, legitimate instructors in the newcastle area?
JKD Newcastle HI GJJ, Easy answer to this one - nope, there aren't any! The nearest "legitimate" JKD instructor would be Rick Young in Edinburgh. Beyond that you have a number of people slapping pictures of Bruce Lee on the walls of their training halls, and some indeed have trained with some JKD guys. The main thing to watch out for is when they vary between teaching "JKD" and Mixed Martial Arts". This happens when JKD is/is not the flavour of the month Bill
Ah, that's too bad, but I'm not surprised to be honest. I'll just have to keep it in mind for the future.
That's a pretty harsh statement. And totally untrue. As DartjhGorn says, Phoenix MMA teaches Juna Fan/JKD. MNAtg is an excellent and highly qualified instructor. JKD classes are: Monday 1900-2000 Tuesday 1900-2000 It's an excellent gym with a great atmosphere and good value for money. PLus there is a free trial week weher you cantry all of the arts on offer to see if you want to train in more thasn just jkd.
Newcastle Mat is a good friend an a mighty fine MAtist, qualified under Ron Balicki in jkd. i have been down to the academy on a number of occasions and found the gym and the atmosphere to be a1 and the instruction to be of the highest quality :woo:
I found this website ages ago, http://www.combative-arts.net/ Do you think this fella is "legitimate"? I dont know ife he even still teaches.
as far as i am aware mr strong did train with bruce for some time but it is unclear how long and what level he was taught to, what i would say is that Ian Andrews is an apprentice under richard bustillo, and so is my instructor and the curriculumn is based on being competent at all the ranges
As a friend of Pat Strong, I can confirm he trained with Bruce at Seattle and LA. He is a close friend of Taky Kimura and is well known by most of the first gen students. As someone who has trained in JKD since Dan's first ever seminar in the UK in 1978-ish, I can honestly say no-one has come near acheiving what Pat has done with the arts he learned. Not only was he a student and friend of Bruce, but he is also friends with Koichi Tohei, Rickson, Rorion, Helio Gracie, the Machado's and many many more major names. Without starting a political war, there is more lineage than the LA school of JKD.
Ian Andrews Hi Seany85, Ian was my first FMA instructor. I have lost contact over the years, but his classes were the best organised I have experienced. The last I heard about him he was running his own academy in Sunderland, but the website doesn't appear to have been updated since it was first put up! Ian trained under Bob Breen, but like a number of people never got his certificate. He has represented a number of different people over the years, and I heard he was under Patrick Strong and Richard Bustillo. But again, that was about five years ago. Bill
Go train with Matt Teasdale. MMA & JKD do sit very well together. MMA is a great vehicle for growth in JKD. Matt's a great guy - he has my backing 100%, for what it's worth - which sadly may be very little these days LOL! Matt is a member here at MAP - his name here is "ballistic"
i am with Yoda on this one, my instructor speaks highly of Yoda, Matt and their leanage, and if you see Ron Balicki and Diana Inosanto at Nc, you know what you are getting in experience, there are very few people at this level and they should be taken advantage of.
well mate form 1 geordie to antoher if your looking for JKD classes hit me with them lol , i want to learn it also...im in a Win chun class at the mo though shud look it up , Sifu John Agar
So GojuKJoe, did you ever make it down to Phoenix? We've had a lot of new starters of late, and untill tonight I dont do the JKD myself so i'm not too sure if we've met yet. If so what did you think?
I haven't been yet because i'm totally skint at the minute, but when i get my student loan, and a job, i'm gonna come along to try it.
You should come downregardless of financial situation. The Gym runs a Free Trial week where you can try all of the classes (JKD, BJJ, Muay thai, Kali, Kickboxing, Vale Tudo, Jiujutsu etc...) for free.
