Ive just come home from my SECOND lesson in Aikido and im not a happy bunny!

I have practiced the foot movements all week every night! just to be told it was crap!

everything i did tonight was rubbish!

also i was shown how to do the foot and hand movements once and then expected to be able to do them, i was told that he ( Sensei ) was not gonna show me how to do the basics every week!

Fair enough but christ its only my second lesson!

There is a Karate club near by i might just go and give that a try! maybe after all that searching Aikido is not for me!

Sound like a crock of **** to me.

Look for another club. Don't judge an art just because one instructor can't teach.

Yet another student bites the dust.

Why not try to talk to the instructor first. Maybe it is just a perceived indifference. Who knows, maybe it was just a bad night for your instructor. I'm not saying that what the instructor did is right, but talk to (him). Maybe it was just a misunderstanding.

By acting as an adult and talking with the instructor about why you are dissatisfied, perhaps you can find a way to become satisfied or to rectify the problem.

Worst case scenario, you talk to the guy and it doesn't help. Then you go down to the other school and see what they have to offer. It might even help the instructor to become a better instructor in the long run, by letting him experience your views of the evening.

Are you man enough to do that Mark? You are a teacher, right? Then you should act like one. Have you ever said the wrong thing to a student and discouraged him? If not, I'm impressed. Maybe you can offer the instructor some pointers on how to treat his students more motivationally.

Yoda says: "Don't judge an art just because one instructor can't teach." I say: "Don't condemn the instructor for making a mistake." Give the guy a chance. Talk to him so he knows how you are feeling.

First once you have given the situation a chance and done everything in your power to improve upon it, without success, is when you should stop. Who knows, you might just be the next Steven Segal. Should the comments of your instructor stop you from achieving that?

    I do agree!

i cannot slate the art because of the Teacher!
That said there are a few other things im not happy about!

firstly he wont allow my Daughter to join in ( she is too young ) however she is 12!
also the fees have gone up to £5.00 for the same amount both my Daughter and i can do Karate!

I dont know yet what i will do, i am going to look at the other school to see if it fits me better so to speak! then and only then will i make a lasting judgement!

Whatever the outcome i will not turn my back on Martial Arts!
    it has become a passion.

Thank you for your advice it is duly noted.

Oh and no im not a perfect Teacher either!:D

I think that's appalling - i would never tell a student that what they were doing was crap - a student needs encouragment & to be corrected in a positive manner!

Some Sensei's show the basics once & then get the higher belts or assistant instructors to repeatedly show newcomers, which isn't so bad but to slam somebody after one lesson:eek:

Just out of interest, what style of Aikido are you doing? I understand you might not want to name and shame instructors, but a couple of things you said rung a bell with me.

Sadly no, but I will be in London this week for training!
If its the same stuff, I might bump into smee193? Although I can't think of any of our instructors down that way that would behave like that.

    the style is Shodokan!

But please understand that i do not wish to sound totally negative about it!

I was made welcome! and i was made to feel part of the club!

i think i just didnt like the way it is taught!
that doesnt mean i think the sensei was wrong it just wasnt the right approach for me!

All the guys there are great.

In fact its not so much them as me!

thanks for all your advice though.

That sounds pretty wrong to me. I've never been told, or heard any instructor telling a student they're crap. Its possible he sees it as a motivation technique, telling you that you're rubbish to try to make you work harder. Or he could just be an arrogant pleb. Have a chat with him about it, and if it doesn't work out, find another place to train before you get too attached.

I can understand clubs having an age limit, in fact I think its a wise idea, but at 12 your daughter should be old enough to train in my opinion.

Ok i want to put this straight!

I am not slagging off the Sensei, he was not abusive just a bit negative! but that may well be the way he teaches people!

Im one of those people that needs to be encouraged, i dont pick things up that easily and i need to be repeatedly shown!
but by NO means am i saying he was out of line or wrong!

I was very down when i came back mainly because i had practiced all week and it was not right! ( crap was my wording not his ) there is also the issue of my Daughter we really want to train together and at the Aikido club she cannot join in!

But please dont think i have come on herer to belittle or to bad mouth the Sensei....

    Thanks

The problem with doing home training in base practices after you've only been shown them once for about 5 mins, is that you haven't yet got a full grasp on them.

As Gichin Funakoshi (a Karate Master) was quoted as saying:

"Practice something badly, and you will be come very good at doing it badly"

People tend to forget, and I'm sure that you can appreciate this, that teachers/Instructors have bad/crappy days too!

Andy Murray Sadly passed away. Rest In Peace.

    You know me, I'm always paddling upstream, but;

The Instructor wasn't just testing to see how resolved you were smee?

I know some instructors, who work around the ethic that students have to prove themselves disciplined enough to keep training no matter what, so perhaps he was just testing you?
