hi guys. i'm john. just starting bjj tonight. have done 6 months of judo, then went off and did about 7 years of hapkido (1st dan), the last year i've been doing aikido. but now decided to get into a bjj club down the street from work. really looking forward to it.

any advice for an older newbie? i'm 40, put on about 25 lbs. of first baby weight (and who says that it's only the lady that puts on the baby weight) in the last year. i'm pretty strong and fairly flexible, but i know i'm going to get my **** kicked in pretty bad tonight.

getting geared up with a mouthguard, headgear, cup and kneepads, although they're not all here yet. anything else you think i need? i don't have a bjj gi, just a judo one for now.

You will do just fine, especially being a youngster. I have being training a little over 2 years now (no-gi) and love it. BTW I'm currently 56 years old. Train at your level and don't feel you need to keep up with anyone.

    Have fun and enjoy.

Your Judo gi should be fine for BJJ for the time being. Just remember to tap out early, there's no point in getting injured in training and no shame to admitting when you are beaten!

yup, got my **** kicked. but it was so fun! a couple of the higher belts let me roll them over...made me feel good. but then i tried to get out of a full mount, thought i was doing good against a purple belt, but he was just setting me up for a triangle choke. ouch! ridiculously fun though.

ok...a week into it. i'm tired. big time. suddenly all these muscles that haven't been used for awhile are active and sore...neck, upper/lower back, shoulders, calves, hamstrings, abs (all of them).

i'm constantly getting either choked or arm-barred. managed to escape a couple times, but i'm learning that it stinks to be in a a bad position. i think i have to figure out how to avoid getting into those positions.

i'm also figuring out pretty quick that i can't brute-force technique. yeah, i managed to get out of one situation by bridging well, but that's only taking me so far. i won't have any energy left if i don't figure out the technique instead. but when another guy is on top of you, then the temptation is there for me to just brute force push him away.

So, where I take martial arts we have Muay Thai at 11 and then BJJ at 12. Usually, I am so gassed and completely worn out that I can't even think of taking the BJJ class. Well, the instructor is very persistent and pleasant about it.

So, Tuesday I had some free time after the Muay Thai class and wasn't completely worn out. Well, after BJJ I was completely worn out :)

It was a lot of fun and learned a ton in 1 hour, it is good to know that learning the technique can be better then just brute strength because I am kinda a small guy.

I also think that BJJ + Muay Thai would make for a very well rounded martial artist, just my opinion though.

I've been doing BJJ and Judo for around 5-6 months, a one stripe white belt. I train at Highground jiu-jitsu outside of pittsburgh, PA. We just run one belt for both BJJ and Judo together.

I also do nogi/mma when I have time for those classes.

I've been doing Muay thai for about 9 months as well and have some various other martial arts classes that I've done too.

I assist with the kids BJJ classes as well sometimes, no teaching - just helping to herd them in the right direction. My daughter is also a one stripe white under my instructor as well.

I have my first competition next month - submission only. I'll be entering as a beginner in the adult white belt division.

In my journey in BJJ and Pankration I have learned after many long hours and hard years of training one thing. Tapping is your friend. :)

So I am back to let you all know i decided to switch from no Gi to Gi, after asking the community I ended up with a Gi from Sirius Athletics. First class in it was super fantastically AWESOME. Learned a lot and still learning.

Having a ton of fun and everyone in the class is really helpful!

Right now I am quick to tap, I do not want to try and be a macho man because quite frankly I'm not.

Hi everyone, I've been here on Map for quite a few years. I've been in martial arts since 1991 with TKD and Hapkido. I just recently stopped teaching Hapkido due to a lack of students. I decided instead of trying to build my school back up that I'd try something different and be a student again.

I've been visiting a Jiu-Jitsu school off and on for several years to help improve my ground fighting. I always left with some more things to work on as well as my humility intact. I could submit the new students that have been there a couple months but any blue belt or above would eventually tap me out. So I decided to join and put a white belt on.

One thing interesting about this school is that they claim to do Japanese Jiu-Jitsu but all they do is ground fighting. While I'm sure many of you will scoff at this here is the explanation that they give: http://www.thejiujitsufighter.com/2011/04/revisiting-little-of-our-history.html

I had my first class last night as a student and I'm loving it. Plus a weight feels like it's been lifted off of my shoulders with not having to plan classes, worry about collecting tuition, etc.

I'm looking forward to learning a lot and competing.

    Hello all.

I did a little bit of TKD early in my life, but nothing substantial. Lately I've been training for about 2.5 years in Ving Tsun. I'm committed to continuing my development in the martial arts and am interesting in training with anybody that is cool and just wants to learn.

I train at Denver Kung Fu school (www.kungfudenver.com) if anyone was curious. Its really awesome.

Currently I'm posting this from Detroit, MI where I'm training with my sifu Owen Matson at a 5th aniversary seminar. (www.kungfudetroit.com).

Hope to meet some cool people, and no matter what... keep trianing.

    Hey everyone!

I introduced myself in the introduction forum, but I'll pop in here too.

My background is Muay Thai and Wrestling, and I've recently joined a BJJ school. I've been grappling for a long time, but you never stop learning. My first competition is tomorrow as a white belt.

I'm excited, but a bit worried because I'm not super familiar with the rules for BJJ Tournaments.

    welcome!

how do you like letsos' place? i've been doing bjj for about a year at valko bjj on orleans.

add: obviously, you've been going there three years so you must like him. more precisely, what do you like best about his teaching style? i considered going there because of the proximity to my house. either rio or pedro vianna's place. tried out valko's place though and really liked it so i stayed.

I like the pressure and crushing of his style. I'm not knocking it but how some schools they all try to jump guard and always take the bottom. I believe in having a full game both top and bottom. Then lets face it like everything in life nothing happens without pressure lol true though.
