I've never really had this. All the people I've rolled with were class acts. From Judo to boxers (and I was boxing) to Jujutsu players.

Actually, there was one guy. He was a judo blue belt I think, and I told him that I probably have as good Newaza as the average Judo black belt and he was convinced I wouldn't be close.

I don't really know what to say, I've rolled with people from two different Japanese ju jitsu schools and they were rather obnoxious to say the least, i don't like to generalize, but i can't say I've met anyone who trained in it who could back up the level of hype they attached to it, and for the record, not a single one caught me with anything.

Granted, I've met a couple of bjj guys who were probably equally obnoxious, but they tapped me more than i tapped them, so i can't really call them on it, as they were better than me at the game than i was, and once they had established a sense of hierarchy, they were pretty friendly and helpful.

Judo guys i can't recall having too many issues with, but i guess the art doesn't define the person in as much as the person defines the art.

I have read all the criticisms on this board. I still go and it works for me.

Didn't it click when they gave you you're green belt after a year that it was a belt factory?

Seriously, go to a judo school, and ask to train with them, they are everywhere, they will set you right and help you realize you are barely a step off unable to defend yourself, barely.

Again I've read the thread. I think they're certainly a belt factory when it comes to the kids but for adults it's hard work getting graded.

Hey if you like it crack on. But there will be a slew of people telling you its not actually JJJ. It's a bad mish mash of karate judo and aikido. So I'm told at least.

But is it hard and worthwhile, or hard and pointless, try against other people, and find out, i know it can be tough coming to terms with putting time and effort into something that was ultimately pointless, but would you rather find out your art is lacking against a trained practitioner in a controlled environment with insurance, or in the middle of an actual confrontation where you try to use your training to defend yourself with no measures of safety.

That is not to say you will ever need to defend yourself, and you might just like the idea of going around calling yourself a black belt in ju jitsu without actually ever knowing what actual ju jitsu is, and the level of perceived confidence that provides, but all in all, you can't sit around hanging crap on bjj when what you do is considered by most learned people to be a farce, i lived on the other side of the world most of my life, and i know Soke Robert Clarke's name is mud among most learned people on reputation alone.

Not to speak ill of the dead, but this was information learned before his passing.

    In what?

What is your experience level in other arts? What pressure testing or utility have you found elsewhere? Is this stubborn adherence or based in objectivity?

WJJF has a bad rep for a reason; so-so techniques, terrible training method and mcdojo belt standards.

Knowing this now I dont blame you for wanting to avoid the weapon work because it is pretty poor overall

I'm not the type that walks around telling people i'm xyz in abc art.

I've done karate for a few months, tai chi for a few months, never done bjj (obviously) but have watched lessons, taekwondo and jjj are the only two that i'm comfortable with.

I left one club which was an offshot of wjjf because the 8th dans all seemed to self promote themselves within their own organisations. Which is why I changed schools and this guy is a 7th dan and said without any prompting or knowing my background something along the lines of "I'm a 7th dan on the mats" which i found kinda cool because i obviously know the offshot of WJJF club i was with previously the 8th dan self graded himself to 9th.

Going back to the original post, as this is a new school all i wanted was some advice regarding how I could approach a new school / sensei and ask that I do not participate in the weapon grading ect.

Neither do i, but when someone has no business saying they can fight, i call them on it.

    You can't fight.

As for advice, either accept you can't fight, in which case weapons training is irrelevant, because you can't fight, or leave, get over yourself and your lack of comfort with fighting and learn how to fight.

Your experience is exceptionally limited hence some of your arguments are being responded to the way they are

I wont sugar coat that despite it not being delicate enough for some tastes

But leaving all that aside to answer your final question the answer is:

    You dont

You do what you are required to do or you go to another club and style that doesnt do weapons

And seriously consider conflict deescalation training, if you are happy playing dress up with a rainbow of belts, you should know how to avoid confrontation correctly, if it ever comes up.
