    Hey folks-

Despite what my profile says, I study Hapkido. In the past I have studied Tang Soo Do Karate, Wing Chun Kung Fu, Muay Thai, Tai Chi, Aikido, and Jiu Jutsu. I sort of "fell into" hapkido a few months ago. I hadn't trained in a while, and I wasn't actively looking for a school. A coworker of mine mentioned that he was training at Black Knight Dojang in Atlanta, and invited me to come check it out. I put if off for several months until my roommate (another coworker) told me he was going to check it out and asked me to come along. He hadn't had any martial arts experience and I guess maybe he was curious what my opinion of the dojang would be. I wasn't expecting much-- I figured it would be too expensive, or I wouldn't like the art, or I wouldn't like the instructors, etc.

Within 5 minutes of meeting the instructor, I had a feeling I was going to really like the place. Now I train there at least 5 days a week. Through dumb luck I've found a school, instructors, and an art I that fits me better than any other I've been exposed to. I love it.

Welcome to BackFistMonkey and Jiraiya! It looks like more Hapkido people are coming in and dropping us some information. BackFistMonkey: I hope the school works out for you, but I also hope that if the school doesn't fit you well that you will find another great school (hopefully Hapkido!). Jiraiya, do you know Xerxes... that's another poster from your area and Black Dragon Dojang?

Yes I do-- he's the one who originally invited me to the dojang. Oh and one small correction-- it is Black Knight Dojang, not Black Dragon.

Black Dragon sounds kind of cool, though. Maybe I'll run it by the Master and see what he thinks. ;)

Sorry... my mistake... at least I got it correct on the list by your name! (We have a Black Dragon Karate studio around here with an awesome head instructor... must have crossed my mind)

By the way, your bio says you study "Genjutsu"... what's that?

  6. Jiraiya

    Jiraiya Valued Member

I think it means something like "mind techniques" (eye techniques is probably a more direct translation). I think it has something to do with illusionary/mental powers, sort of like a jedi mind trick. :) The name I have on MAP and the profile information were taken from an anime show called "Naruto" (with the exception of my geographical location).

"Jiraiya" the character isn't much like me. He likes to get drunk and chase women, he's a self-avowed pervert, and he writes trashy novels. But he's a great guy with a lust for life, he's fiercely loyal, and he's a very powerful martial artist. And he makes me laugh, so that's how I settled on the name.

As far as I know, nobody studies genjutsu. I assume that it is part of martial arts mythology, unlike terms like ninjutsu and taijutsu (which I believe just means "body techniques").

    Greetings,

My Name is Stuart Rosenberg I've been studying Korean Hapkido since 1979. I've been a Black Belt since 1983

My main teachers were Master Tae Soo Son 7th Dan KHF & Doju Ji Han Jae.
Currently I'm a 5th dan in SinMoo Hapkido and 4th Dan in KHF Ulji Kwan.

I teach four Hapkido classes weekly in New Jersey and train with Doju Ji once or twice a month.

I'm a bit on the Traditional side when it comes to Hapkido, however I have no promblem learning other Arts or cross training.

    Pet Peeves:
I get annoyed with the Mixing and Matching of Hapkido with other systems or changing it around etc. to me its an insult to Hapkido.

A Rose by any other name is still a Rose.

    Dear Backfist,

    Thanks for the welcome!

I'm not as Traditional or one sided as some of my posts may sound.
I've studied several styles and I know Hapkido's taught in many flavors.

At my school I teach modern defense tactics the same as the new modern sytles do.

For example no-one will attack you with a lunge punch of many older types of Karate, we train defending jab, cross, uppercut. In most case the same standard Hapkido techniques will apply with a variation on the entry or deflection. We also do some basic trapping skills too.

Kick defense, grabs, headlocks, chokes, haven't changed very much in the 25 yrs I've been in the Arts, some extra work on the ground is needed but Hapkido always had a fair ground defense system for the most part as most traditonal JJ systems have.

BJJ has taken things to a different level I'll admit, and wrestlers have alway been tough too. In a street situation grappling is not a good place to be where it's likey to have to defend against more than one.

Hi, I have been studying Combat Hapkido for 5 years, I am a 1st Dan Candidate but have been training off and on for the last 2 years due to a car accident, but began training since age 4 first in Karate, then studied everything from Jujitsu to Muay Thai to Taekwondo, some Wushu..., let's just say I did a lot of shopping around. I couldn't be happier with my instructor or system. What I enjoy the most about Hapkido(Traditional or Combat, I take no part in bashing ANY system) is that it is a confrontational based martial art, not about 2 trained fighters who get to study each other by video tape under rules and regulations, but rather vs. the jacked up PCP addict looking to cut you open for your shoes. There is a certain seriousness to it (that isn't exclusive to just Hapkido), but I think that is important for today's streets, Lots of scenario dynamic drills, and truly anything goes, I love it. Good to be here.

    nice to meet you too
i find that although hankido exists only out off 12 techniques (12+ & 12-), you can apply them on so much (grip, kick, punch, weapons,...), besides mastering these 12techniques to the fullest (i'm told) is a lifelong-challenge :D

by the way, we trained with GM Do Ju Myung Sung Kwang and GM Ko Ju Shik @easter (for a week) (they visited Belgium&The Netherlands) and when you see them spinning  wow, maximum respect ;)

    Chalk another one up...

    Hi guys/gals...

I study in Merrillville,IN at the Asian Martial Arts and Cultural Center. Sounds big and impressive,no? It's not quite, yet,we are still trying to "recover" from our move to a new Dojang...but hey,it'll get there. :)

My teacher is Mst. Pinkowski 6th Dan. Great guy and knowledgable teacher. We are affiliated with the Hanminjok Hapkido Association and the World Kido Federation(Kidohae).

I have been studying Hapkido for a little over 3 yrs. now,if I remember right, which is doubtfull. I "came over" from Aikido,so I kinda "fell in love at first breakfall" if you will. :D I have to say I truly love Hapkido,as it "fits" me,if you know what I mean. Enough of my rambling. See you around...

    Best Regards,

    Paul
