    "check in"

Hello, my name is Mike I study with John-IHF, under Master Jeff Allen. We study the art of Hapkiyusul, or what GM Choi referd to as yawara. I enjoy it very much. Our GM Jang Young-Shil studied directly under GM Choi, and trained military personel on base with GM Bong Soo-Han. GM Jang as been teaching exactly what he learned from Choi for over 40 years. I've been posting before, but I never put myself in the check in, figured I would do it now. "namaste"

I started my martial arts training about 10 years ago in Shorinjiryu karate. I really didnt know what kind of things to look for in the martial arts so I was totally clueless. The further I went in the style the more it became clear the focus was on sport karate. I will admit that most of the tournament players in the school were quite good and did great under AAU rules. I finally started researching different arts and found that many schools still focus on self-defence and traditional values. I mentioned this to a friend of mine and he told me about a TKD and Hapkido school that does not teach Olympic style TKD and focuses on old school training. The school is under Master Peter Kim and David Lipscomb. Well, I went the class, which was free through the YMCA and totally loved it. I felt more liberation in the high stances of TKD (I have long legs and kicking from a horse stance was always a weak point for me) and was amazed by the hapkido. Everything about the hapkido blew my mind! How can you be thrown to the ground and not be hurt? How can this simple wrist lock cause so much pain?? After a few years, students came and went and I became the senior belt in the class. Eventually I tested for my black belt in both arts and now am the assistant instrucor. I have to say, off all the arts I have studied since beginning Hapkido, nothing compares to HKD. I still train in TKD and love it, but being a Hapkido student is a great source of personal pride for me.
On a side note, once I got my black belt I went an enrolled in a judo school. I find Judo and Hapkido have so much in common and it's a blast putting both arts together.

    Checking in from Clemson, SC

I figured I might as well check in here too. I'm a professor of Philosophy at Clemson University and currently a 4th kup (brown belt). I train under Instructor David Tonkyn at the Clemson University Hapkido club. We are affiliated with Master Gedo Chang's school in Chicago, which teaches Master Chang's Wol Ge Kwan style. Once each semester Master Chang comes to Atlanta and the students from the Clemson and Georgia State University clubs meet for rank testing and a seminar. I started because as I approached the big 40 I decided I could no longer rely on youth to save my health and I knew I wouldn't be able to stick with any exercise I didn't also find interesting. Hapkido fits the bill perfectly - I've been training now for almost 2 years and truly love it.

I began studying hapkido in 1984 through a local "after hours" community school program that operated on a quarter system. In 1990 the instructor stopped teaching because of a bad knee injury. During that time frame I skipped a lot of quarters so progress was very slow for me. I only got up to 4th Kup. But, I never failed a test.

In 1998 I started working at GaTech and signed up with the campus hapkido club. I had to start at the bottem once again. It also operated on a quarter system and once again(because of work schedule, injuries, and laziness) I skipped a lot of quarters so progress has been slow. I'm now at 2nd Kup.

Last summer the instructor at the campus club opened a commercial dojang so I have been studying there. It is the same place that Coomazen who posted earlier studies at: Black Knight Dojang in Atlanta.

Hey Poorly Knee, I train at Chang's Hapkido Academy too, except in the states. Out here theres 2 splinter schools besides the main school in Lombard, I'm at one of them. Nice to see another Chang's Hapkido student on here :D I believe you're the third (including me) I've seen, but the other one doesn't seem to come on to often

Actually, Master Chang has seven splinter schools run under his tutelage, including the one at Clemson University where I train. Also, by my count we have four people who've posted to this site and study under master Chang: paratus, kcs, poorly knee and milt10n.

    Hello

    Hi Paratus and KCS

    Pleasure to make your web-acquaintance.

What level are you both at? I've got my first grading in a few weeks and am practising hard to get everything right and reading various books (Tedeschi, Spear, Bong Soo Han, etc) whenever I can.

But pass or fail, it's all good stuff.

First grading eh? Well good luck ;) I'm sure you'll do fine. Me, I'm a brown belt w/ a red stripe, so that makes me...3rd Kup I believe.

I'm just a lowly brown belt, though I test for red stripe April 9th.

My name is Milton Chan. Like Paratus, I train in a Chang's Hapkido Academy, but in another suburb of Chicago under Grandmaster Gedo Chang (WolGeKwan). I am a on and off 4th year student 1st Gup. My training has very sporatic because of personal problems that we don't need to get into. I am training for my 1st dan this year, the physical part is what i got to accomplish first. the mental is what I have and pretty stable. My master has always help me with the mental part. My Master has always said he can teach anyone techniques all day long but if you don't have the strength mentally, your training is nothing. This is also in certain things in daily life situations. So like I said. I am training for my first dan this Year. Grandmaster Chang is 8th Hapkido, 5th Taekwondo and master if KI. He is a very great man to be studying from. I am not saying any other instructor or master is bad, I am saying that we all know who we respect or don't by just walking into different schools no mater what the art. Thanks for reading this and Good luck to all who is training for better health and mind in whatever art. Remember, we are training to be better and confident not Cocky.

Hi everyone, my name is Rodrigo Molina, and I am a 16 year old learning Hapkido at Kim's Hapkido in Monrovia, CA. Some of you may know the head instructor there, Master Les Connard. I started back when I was 12 years old in 7th grade. I tested for my Black Belt on March 26th, so that was really cool! Grand Master Chong Sung Kim is the founder of Jang Mu Won Hapkido by the way. I will tell all of you my entire story about my Hapkido history later, but for now, I would just like to give a quick introduction. Hope to see you guys here often! -Rod
