Okay this might seem like a stupid question. But has anybody ever used a hanbo in their Aikido practice?

Actually I had to google the word. (It's a stick 90 cm / 3 feet long.) No, I have never used it in an aikido class.

I had never heard of it until recently either.

Some styles of jojutsu use it as a variant of their style's main weapon. I can't say if any schools of aiki-jo use it.

So far as I can figure it's something that's come into favour more recently. I haven't found any actual Aikido schools that claim to use it. However someone mentioned to me that some do.

It's the 1st weapon you do in Bujinkan Taijutsu usually - never seen an Akidoka with one. But that means nothing as I have only seen a couple of Akidoka teaching and talked to a couple in Belfast.
There is a book called Stick Fighting co-authored by Hatsumi Sensei and Quinton Chambers which covers it extensively.
3ft is really too short for me to do some of the techniques properly.

Here's a vid of Anshu Christa Jacobson using one in some demonstration stuff. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqV_3oULbxs"]Anshu Christa Jacobson Hanbojutsu[/ame]

Dude, I think you've been having your circulation cut off for too long recently, 'Anshu Chris' is perhaps the worst example you could pick for someone from a different art to view.

This is a much much better example:

I use a 2ft stick for strikes blocks and locking up an attacker ..

I have also trained witha 4ft Jo and a 6ft Bo ...never used a 3ft staff ....may have to give it a try

'Christa' is a joke with the serious Takamatsuden, her movement is very poor, she sells made up ninja schools, and the randori I've seen online could be bettered by a 6 month judo or BJJ student.

You haven't answered my question. I am finished now and will stop cluttering up the thread with OT stuff.

finished means I will not post except on the original topic.

Do you mean the circulation bit? That was due to the Bujinkan having a lot of shime waza in it, why what did you mean?

Ken jo and tanto are the weapons studied in aikido. O Sensei developed the aiki ken and aiki jo. Saito Sensei sytemised the weapons .

Tanto, bokken and jo are the only weapons I've used koyo. But it seems some people may be borrowing this weapon from other arts to represent a cane or smaller stick. As someone who would encourage cross training would you encourage this sort of experimentation?

  16. koyo

koyo Passed away, but always remembered. RIP.

Tanto ken and jo cover the three main distances for me and were developed by O Sensei to study principles used empty handed.

Tanto to show the importance of triangular entry/avoidance, (NOT circular)

    Ken for decisive striking

Jo instinctive use of forward and rear striking and unbalancing.

I personally have no interest in tying up or pinning an attacker using a hanbo. My main interest is to be effective unarmed using the principles of the weapons I study.

Experimentation is fine BUT there is only so much time so I tend to concentrate on the aiki weapons. One of the guys.David, crosstrains in in Filipino arts so I shall ask him tomorrow.

I must say I was not impressed at all by the first video.. and in the second one stances are against the principles of natural movement.Plus using such a short weapon to tie someone up seams rather pointless, in close the hands are far more effective.

Perhaps this is something from Japanese police defense training? We sometimes use tanbo, but that is because we have a connection with the Tokyo Riot Police...or used to at least. We also have a sister organization that teaches Police Defensive/Control Tactics in North America which my teacher has applied his training from the Tokyo Riot Police Academy to the modern Asp or Monadnock batons. Anyway...these are much shorter than the hanbo. Unfortunately I've never heard of the hanbo before, so I can't add anything actually useful.

The "tying people up" stuff is pretty fun, and I did them in a baton course I took, but one of the things I really love about buki waza is kumi buki particularly using buki of different lengths (particularly kumi tanto tachi or kumi tanto jo). Of course ma'ai is developed but I love the mentality involved in the bunkai with tanto vs. long weapons.

My sentiments exactly koyo. I just don't really see the point.

afhuss i think you just taught me a whole load of new words. I'll have to look up tanbo :p

I just found this little article. I'm not saying I believe the story behind the hanbo. But I kinda get it now. If it's all you have then it's all you have. An extra 3ft of reach could be useful. But then again I haven't seen any hanbo techniques thus far that make use of the extra reach advantage.

I also found this. And I'm hoping koyo doesn't read it. :p
