    shaolin_hendrix Hooray for Zoidberg!

Are there any places that teach Greek Wrestling? I'm not really interested in the Roman part of Greco-Roman Wrestling, I heard that modern Pankration is just an imitation of what we know about the historical version of Pankration, and Pancrase is a tournament, not a style. Is there anyone who knows what Greek Wrestling was like before the Romans changed it?

Greek-style wrestling? Two strong, muscular men...in the nude...lathered in olive oil...each writhing to submit the other...

Greco-Roman wrestling is neither Greek nor Roman but comes from a French style often called Old Norman wrestling. Some time in the 19th century someone decided that the sport seemed very much like the wrestling described it he works or Homer and other classical sources and the name was changed to reflect the more romantic time.

As for what the Calssical greek version was all about......

A friend of mine read in a book where the author claimed that the greek wresteling (asuming he meant the greek wresteling and not the norman wresteling called greek wresteling) considered of much more than just locks, holds and throws, but allso had kicks and punches. I'll call back on it and see if I can find the title of the book.

(I've allso seen on Discovery some Turkish wresteling where the guys are wresteling in leather-pants, completely covered with oil, where they search for holds INSIDE THE PANTS  Since Turkey is next to Greece, and since the Helenistic/Macedonian influence was/is pretty strong in Turkey, this rather flabbergasting style of wresteling might have somthing in common with the Greek wresteling, stuff.)
