First Time HEMA

On Sunday I'll be going to my first HEMA session.
What should I expect from training? I've seen a lot of videos of matches, but I haven't seen much training. Do HEMA schools usually focus on drills or are classes usually mostly sparring?

 

Depends entirely on the school. Some are more like koryu in that it will be very structured with little sparring. Others are more like modern sport training, with sparring being a major part of the class. Or you could find anything in between. Where are you training?

 

I'll be training in Milwaukee with the Wisconsin Historical Fencing Association.
