Interesting experience. Not going full out, it felt quite good. The most noticeable difference is that when it hit the ground I still had loads of time to work. Being that I was the more experienced grappler both times I had two and a half minutes of smothering someone. The amount of energy they expended trying to escape was huge. Because I didn't need to rush to catch a submission I could relax, keep composed and tire them out.

I did 2x5 with two different opponents. Next week I might do three.

    Nice.

What round time do you usually use? For striking I do 2mins but we always used to do 5-10mins for grappling and MMA.

I've done loads of 5 minute BJJ rounds. Striking is normally 2-3 minutes. Amateur MMA here is 3x3 rounds :)

Recently at training, we've been running the old Brazilian system for rounds, Roll to Sub, and then sit out until someone else does the same, it works best with odd numbers, and with people who dont sit out when they're tired.

Having said that, wrestling rounds over three minutes long are so godam tiring, which is why they keep them short nowadays (2 x 3minutes for greco and freestyle I think)

I reckon 5-10mins for BJJ is a good amount. You don't have to rush and can work patiently. I used to find 5-10mins of MMA far more grueling due to the increased activity of grounded striking and shooting for takedowns/defending takedowns.

I actually find striking more tiring than Jujitsu as you have to be moving constantly, the breathing is completely different and it's harder to slow the pace. About 2mins and I usually need that minutes rest unless it's been a slow round.

I like that roll to sub idea. Cuts the round time down to 20secs maaaaaayte ya get meey?

Sorry, to clarify, I meant I'm doing five minute MMA rounds. xD

Wondering who is going to show up next week and spar. If I get some guys who can out grapple me it would be very interesting.

I didn't even use that much. Once it went to the ground I kept top position and didn't use any energy.

There were times, when I would do a 30min round of wrestling. Don't think I can do that again.
It was only when me and another would turn up for training back in the day and rather drill stuff, just spar.

Wrestling is the most physically taxing of all the combat sports in my experience. A 30min round is no joke! Fair play to you.

your fitness level at the area of fighting is increased by your experience, mostly due to your ability to be more physically efficient in that area.
I think that's is the great thing about MMA, you can take the fight to where you feel most comfortable.

I used to regularly do 20-30 mins kickboxing sparring, but this usually involved a minute rest every 3 minutes whilst we changed partners, plus it was usually medium contact. whereas rolling I hadn't as much consistent mat time, so would gas quicker.

I have always found the clinch/throw hardest, I.e. randori in judo, getting thrown, and getting back up is so tiring, even though I've had more randori time and in sanda throwing than mat rolling time.
thats impressive! I've done freestyle wresting for a few months and found it physically hardest, harder than randori in judo- the lack of gi to grip on speeds up the pace. one session I was so tried I couldn't drive home, had to park up and rest :Do_O
