    Does God Exist?

For millennia man has worshiped a Deity of some form or the other. Be it one God or multiple Gods. Obviously this thread isn't going to answer the question of whether an almighty, omnipresent, potent and omniscient entity exists; but it'll sure open up some discussion, ey?

My opinion (which, by all means ignore): I believe in a God, not one associated with any Abrahamic religion, albeit one that exists nonetheless. Ultimately I'm Agnostic about the whole situation, though I think the universe is too complex to have just appeared like a cheeky fart. I guess my opinion also appeals to my hope of an afterlife, maybe that's because I wouldn't be too happy with the idea that we would just cease to exist once we pass away. But anyway that isn't too important.

Tl;dr: I believe in God and the afterlife, but don't want to label myself as part of any religion and instead, have a more personal relationship with the 'supposed' God I believe in.

'Nuff about me, what do you believe in?

Obviously discussions like this can become a giant flame war, so pack spare undies. Also, respect everyone's belief. We're all entitled to one and you can't prove or disprove a higher entity's existence.

    Let the battle begin.

I'm in the same boat as you. I like the idea of a higher power, not sure on the after life part. But I dint follow any religion. Marcus Aurelius sums up my religious beliefs fairly well "Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but...will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones."

It is perfectly reasonable to assume that there is an omnipotent, omnipresent being. It is quite unreasonable to base your entire faith on this being on a book written by people who did not understand where the sun went every night.

I also think if they're is a super being out there (everywhere?) That it does not care or have a moral compass relative to ours. Nor do I believe it influences our meaningless lives at all.

What I think people fail to realise is what "all powerful" truly means. Literally could disprove science in a heartbeat. Could cure cancer, extend world's resources, remove torture from the world. Instead we do everything on our own. Nothing to be bitter about, because this being doesn't exist.

Tl;dr bible god doesn't exist. No way. Omnipotent, omnipresent being perhaps.

I don't think it's reasonable at all actually. What evidence warrants such an assumption?

In my opinion? That we are probably unable to prove/disprove that it exists. Or that it does anything. You could say the universe is the omnipotent omnipresent being too I suppose.

Honestly, my view tends to be:

    "Does it matter?"

Seriously. God/god/gods/goddesses/Cthulhu/Azazel/me may all exist. They may not. They may actually care about what we mortals do here in our time. They may not. They may be competing for our eternal souls. They may not, we may not even have souls. We may already know everything about deities we can, we may not.

If there is such a thing as a God that is capable of creating the universe & our existence - exactly what chance do we mere mortals have of comprehending something so vast? Does it have a sense of morality? Is there any way we can honestly determine its' moral compass if it even has one? Does it have any traits we can recognise or quantify?

But here's the crux - exactly what does it mean for us in our lives, here and now, either way?

We can spend our entire lives arguing for or against the existence of God/god/gods/etc. But those arguments won't put food on the table. They won't pay the bills. They won't raise my kids or help me lose weight or improve my training methods.

So just how important is it to us in our every day lives to actually worry about these things, really? Sure, it's fun for a bit of mental self-pleasuring occasionally and it can absolutely help give others some sort of self-comfort, but for me? Eh.

I happen to be more of an Atheist's Wager kinda person than a Pascale's Wager type, in case you hadn't noticed.

But for discussions sake I'm really more of an atheist these days though I call myself an agnostic. I haven't seen credible evidence to suggest a belief in God is warranted specifically and the experiences I have had in the past have all had reasonable explanations to them. But I also know I could be completely wrong.

So, yes the existence of God is a non falsifiable proposition, similar to a completely undetectable orca in my rectum. That doesn't make it reasonable to assume its existence.

No that's the detectable orca, and I'd prefer if we could keep discussions about my sex life out of it.

Best religious books I ever read.

I'm much more into the idea of having mindless beings beyond our comprehension that don't care if we worship them or not than some anthropomorphic daddy deity in the sky.
