This guy does the most fantastic acoustic version of the most depressing skate-punk song of the 1990s

Canna go wrong with the Stupids.

    That was ace! [IMG]

Covers better than the originals being rare, a couple do come to mind.

This one's a toss-up. I loved Steve Winwood's singing - particularly with Blind Faith and his soulful voice croaks and splits octaves in this - my favourite version but Chicago Transit Authority's has so much energy, the huge percussion section in the middle and most of all - Terry Kath's guitar.

I could think of few that ranked at the top of the Worst Musician categories more than Sid Vicious but the poor sod managed to do some great covers. :liar:

Frank Sinatra's "My Way" being one.

I am really surprised no one has brought this one up yet:

Also, totally lacking in relevance, here is another personal favorite:

I've to say, I think this a superior version - rawer and the bottom-heavy bass give it a scraggy, nodular feel that the original doesn't have.

Ironically, the song is "Chinese Rocks". It was Chinese Rock that ended up killing Sid in an O.D.

Devo - whered they come up with the funk - guitar rhythm from? Brilliant. This isn't they same song by the time they finished with it.

I think if one does a cover of an iconic classic song - like one of the defining songs of a band and or/ defining songs in rock history - you better darn well do it well and pay homage to it properly while adding something of your own to it. it is a hard balance to strike properly.

So, thinking of that, here is one cover I hate. The Dixie chicks got in a lot of trouble for saying negative things about our president (Bush) overseas, but the real reason they deserved derision is this aweful cover of the classic iconic Fleetwood Mac song "Landslide." I even hate to post it because I am "advertising" it. The singer has nothing Stevie Nicks can't do tons better.

    The cover............. (boo)

And Rock Goddess Stevie Nicks with Fleetwood Mac.............. (no real video- just one of those lyrics things, but you can hear the song)

Ok, on the other end of the spectrum. And continuing the theme of my last post- that if you are going to do an iconic song, you better darn well do it with excellence, here is my favorite music youtube clip ever. It is Heart (my absolute favorite band) doing a cover of Led Zeppelin's (also a favorite) "Stairway to Heaven."

They did it in front of the three surviving members. And got a standing ovation from them at the end. I find it moving to see Robert Plant brought to tears of joy with this rendition. And all of them obviously very moved by this performance.

I also think (need to confirm) that John Bonham's son (Jason) is playing drums.

I am not going to post the original, because - whether you like it or not - I can't imagine anyone needs me to post it to know what song I am talking about. Seriously, does anyone NOT know the original?

When I first heard that, I was well aware that it was a cover, and I thought to myself "there is no way the original could come close to the awesomeness of Cash's cover." Years later I heard the original, and to my complete lack of surprise, I was right.

This song is on my all-time-favorite list, but maybe, maybe, Glee did it better than Journey. It's a tough call.

The Superbowl being this weekend, I'm already cringing in anticipation of the anthem being butchered. This here "cover" by Meat Loaf, though, is the best that I can remember. He didn't embellish. He didn't add notes or extend notes. He didn't put himself into the song to say, "Look at me! Look at me! I have the microphone!" And that's what makes it so good. :applause:

This forum being fairly U.K. centric might need a reintroduction, at least. Despite being an English band, they were far more popular in the States.

I despised them for the longest time - having had fourth row seats, suffered getting through massive throngs of nasty, hateful drunkies only to have the show canceled after a few numbers due to a vomiting-fit by the guitarist.

Be that as it may :) ...

I shan't take it back, for thou art wrong! *takes off gentleman's glove and slaps sloth across the face with it* Thin Lizzy's cover made it kewl first. Watch any live performance of it-the audiences are always full of hipsters sort of bobbing their heads along with the beat. :google:

I've seen quite a few people refer to Metallica's version of 'Whiskey in the Jar', and say that it was better than Thin Lizzie's. Naturally, I ignored this, but eventually I succumbed and just out of curiosity, I YouTubed it.

I had to stop it after less than a minute because it was annoying me so much.

Metallica aren't fit to lick Thin Lizzie's boots. That's all I have to say.
