You should attempt to acquire "Shugyo" by Gozo Shioda. The english version is hard to come by and you will most certainly have to get it online. But it is great.
Here are some vids of Chiemi Nakagawa Sensei. She is Takeno Sensei's chief instructor at Yamanashi Yoshinkan and has been his main Uke for nearly 20 years. She is a testament to the fact that size, strength and gender do not matter in Aikido. Her techniques are absolutely devastating. I had the privilege of training with her in Japan last year, having been on the receiving end of half a dozen shomen iriminage and feeling completely battered Nakagawa Sensei politely informed me she was only going at 50% [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyZaEOpV2nY&NR=1"]Nakagawa Sensei at the 50th Annual Demonstration Japan 2005 - YouTube[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1YNPrr9Auo"]091011 第22回山梨県åˆæ°—é“æ¼”æ*¦å¤§ä¼šã€€ä¸*å·åƒæµç¾ŽæŒ‡å°Žå“¡æ¼”æ*¦ - YouTube[/ame] [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdX_Wx4FCgg"]All Japan Yoshinkan Aikido Embutaikai Part 3 - YouTube[/ame] http://www.youtube.com/watch?NR=1&v=JkYIVB6_opk
Hey brother, got a question for you....is she doing iriminage when she is going almost all the way down? Not a critique or anything, just curious if that's the way you are doing it kihon, if its iriminage or something different but similar, or some oyo type movement. Anyway, thanks!
Yes that's iriminage. It's one of the ways Shioda did it sometimes. It's especially unforgiving as you're using you opponent's momentum to slam their head into the ground and if you follow through all the way you stop the energy dispersed in any bouncing or breakfalling is nullified with your hand. If I ever wanted to splatter someone's brains all over the concrete that's certainly how'd I'd do it.
It is Irimi Nage, but it's definitely not the Kihon version that I'm learning. That's her own one where she takes you all the down to the ground. She is quite small and doing it that way means she can dominate a tall Uke. Very powerful.

That's cool, I've seen people go all the way to the ground with irimi tsuki, but not shomen irimi nage...that's why it kind of popped out at me, first time seeing it that way and was wondering if it was another deal entirely. Thanks for the prompt response! Osu!

Hi Nick Welcome to MAP and the Aikido forum First of all, kudos for sticking up some vids of yourself. Everyone should do it. There is a mountain of stuff to discuss in those vids but one thing really grabbed my attention: In your sokumen iriminage's (about 2.30 in the third vid) It seems that you are over extending yourself and putting you balance at risk. It looks like your arm goes past the line of your hip and becomes disconnected from your body. If uke had a mind to hang on to your arm a bit longer would there be a risk of them pulling you over? Also, Is there a reason that Aikikai/Iwama styles don't look at Uke when doing a sokumen throw? It seems to be something I keep noticing and I just wondered why? In Yoshinkan the focus always remains on uke and the hands act as the focal point to put uke into the floor. Been a bit slow round here recently. So here's an old video of Gozo Shioda [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8H4t0pcXHs&feature=related"]ã€æ˜ 画】åˆæ°—é“-塩田剛三 47æ³-ã€é¤Šç¥žé¤¨ã€‘Aikido Yoshinkan Shioda Gozo 10th dan - YouTube[/ame]
Dear Aikidojomofo, also I forgot to answer your last question: Is there a reason that Aikikai/Iwama styles don't look at Uke when doing a sokumen throw? Well, I find the question interesting, when I studied Yoshinkan the focus was very much on your partner you practice with, where as Iwama Style teaches you 'one against many' feeling. So when you see me looking away from my partner when he is being thrown. it is simply because I am looking to the side beware of my surrounding so if an attacks was happening behind me, I can quickly respond, but if I look at my partner then I do not see what is 'going on' behind my back. That is the way Saito Sensei would teach and put the emphasis of being aware behind you... Cheers,
Not sure what happened here but I have sent a first reply to your query and it seems that it has not been posted prior to the posting above... Hopefully you will get my answer.
Totally agree, never look in the direction of Uke, especially when throwing. Two main problems when you face uke when throwing. 1, you usually move your hips away from uke and it becomes just your arms PUSHING them away instead of throwing them over the hip and 2. its VERY easy for uke to pull you down if they grab on when falling down if you look in there direction when they fall down. Plus also the one and many idea, if your looking at uke you have no Zanshin for the other attackers.
