Bruce Lee chewing Cannabis.

Discussion in 'General Martial Arts Discussion' started by Ragnarok2005, Jan 29, 2006.

  1. I only found out about this recently and it shocked me. Not in a bad way as such. He said he did it because of the stress he was under, and I understand that.... But I thought for the sake of his own [incredible] health he would have avoided something like that. Especially when his life was martial arts and I'm sure he could have turned to a more relaxing martial arts exercise for a day just to un-wind.

I'm not against cannabis. But I'd never do it as a martial artist because I'd be worried about what it does to my reflexes. I feel kind of dissapointed that Bruce Lee did. Am I over-reacting?

    What's all your opinions?

My opinion? I'd say considering as he's been dead for a while you're probably over-reacting, yeah. :)

    Considering the time frame (late 60s-early 70s), you're over-reacting....

who cares? i know that in NZ at least the percentage of people who have NOT taken marijuana is a minority. and thats the people who are willing to admit it in a survey.

The people who have taken marijuana in that survey. They weren't Bruce Lee now were they? :p.

That's probably the funniest thing I've read all day! :D

I've always admired Bruce Lee. I got into martial arts at 7 because I wanted to be like him. He's inspired me a lot... And now I found out that. It's actually really knocked me.

why? i know GREAT fighters who have smoked or still do. you would lose admiration for someone because they have a bit of the whacky backy now and then?

  7. No. I still admire him as much as I've ever done. I just think, by comparison all the anti-drugs work Chuck Norris has done, and then Bruce Lee's doing it.

Hehe, part of why Bruce Lee is so much cooler than Chuck Norris. :D

Seriously though, its not like he was a straight up pothead, no way he would have smoked enough to interfere with his cardio training. If you don't mind my asking where did you hear it? I found out in some documentary that I can't remember the name of, one of his producers was discussing it I believe.

so what if chuck norris is anti drugs? i dont see the relevance.

  10. I read it in a biography by Bruce Thomas. Which is actually a very decent source. I think the conversation about Bruce chewing cannabis was from Taky Kimura. But I'll definetly have to double check that.

And the relevance? I've never been into drugs and I think Chuck Norris is doing his country a great service trying to get rid of them. Like I said. I was just a dissapointed that I found out my childhood hero did something that I thought a really dedicated martial artist wouldn't.

By the way, and again this is from the same biography. It mentioned the author believed Yip Man would have taken Opium. Has that got any truth in it?

watto86 Nah brah I'm not gone

Ragnarok. I can see how it is shocking. Hell, I only just woke up. I wasn't ready to be told a guy like Bruce Lee had chewed Cannabis. Maybe it was the sort of thing he only did extremely rarely. I'm talking like once ever 6 months or even less. Right now. I'm more dissapointed and confused why he'd put up with a horrific taste by chewing it rather than smoking it. I spose he didn't want to stuff up his lungs, in which case he could have had hash cookies or ganja cake.

ok NEWSFLASH: LOTS of people have done marijuana. your parents were probably chugging away during the 70s just like everyone else. so he did something you disagree with. the foo fighters have some pretty weird views regarding AIDS that i dont agree with- does this stop me from liking their music? or do i accept that people can have a difference of opinion and still respect them? your view is that marijuana is bad. obviously Lees view was that it wasn't. Now maybe if it was something that mattered, like he was a convicted murderer, it would be a little different. but because someone smoked weed during the 70s?!?! holy crap you better not associate to anyone over 40 years old then!

Yip Man probably did take opium, since it was hardly considered bad at the time and place that he was doing it.

  13. Ikken you're being very sarcastic at someone who is perhaps a little less informed than you, don't ya think? Alright maybe I'm a little nieve when it comes to drugs. I'll admit that.

"your view is that marijuana is bad"

My best friend smokes it every day. What I said was, I didn't think someone who cared so much about his health as Bruce Lee did, would have done it. I personally have always refused it because I'd believed that great martial artists would discourage it. Obviously I was wrong.

"your parents were probably chugging away during the 70s just like everyone else."

I'm pretty sure my dad was at War :p

But anyway. Leave your replies. I have to be off to bed. Because it's nearly 1AM and I have College tomorrow. Goodnight everyone.

From what I can gather cannabis was the least of his worries, wasn't he addicted to opiate based painkillers?

I'm pretty much with Ikken on this one. Marijuana isn't as bad as high school guidance counselors like to tell people. It really just goes to show that whatever he smoked (chewed?) didn't affect his hard work and discipline.

Chewing? Yuck. I hope he atleast made brownies.

Chewed weed? Who cares. Weed aint exactly the hardest drug. I know 10 yr old kids that smoke dope. I know 12 yr olds that dump E and snort speed.

Give it 5 years max, and all of this stuff will be legal. Especially when the government realises how much money they can make. Billions of $$ a year.

Alot of people use weed for "self exploration" etc. Alot of people use ecstasy to help aid meditiation aswell. Drugs have their places, wether you are against their use or not. I hardly see how some mary jane use taints his image.

Painkillers are what finished him off. Ironically, abusing weed is alot safer than abusing codeine, considering the legalites of both. Dump 4 codeine tablets in booze, do that for a few weeks, and you liver will pretty much shut down.

Years later, during his presidential campaign, his opponent raised it as an issue. Bruce Lee's response:

I did chew cannabis when I was younger, but I didn't swallow.

    True story. ;)

Yeah I'm sure all those "12 year olds that dump E" are meditating on how to get their next fix while slumped over in some crackhouse while they massage each other... Do you bother to even listen to yourself sometimes? I sometimes wonder if I've been normal thru all my formative "exploration" years and everyone else is just plain screwloose.

Bottom line is this.. I'll agree with you.. Drugs do have their place. E is a great psychotheraputic tool, so is LSD, as are mescaline/peyote or magic mushrooms. The problem is your statement.. "Alot of people use weed for "self exploration" etc. Alot of people use ecstasy to help aid meditiation aswell." I can count on one hand how many drug users I've known and associated with in my juvenile thru adult years that have done drugs for any kind of true medicinal or meditative usage. Modern Western society doesn't appreciate them for what they are, instead the vast majority are in it to get brain humped for hours on end.

In regards to this thread: a major figure in martial arts pop culture discovered to enjoy reefer? Pfft.. Big Whoop.. I'm not surprised.. not with the way he was always screaming for WAAAAAATAAAHHH all the damn time.. :D

I'm rather surprised though.. you figured a pothead like Bruce would be a little bigger.. with all those munchies ya know ;)
