Does look like fun! Would like to ask a question on history... Appears that shinden fudo ryu (of some sort) played a major part in the Bartitsu/Defendu schools. I have studied shinden fudo ryu daken and shinden fudo ryu jutaijutsu...is there a connection that you know of?
Apparently E.W. Barton-Wright trained in Shinden Fudo Ryu under Terajima Kuniichiro. A different branch to the Takamatsu/Toda Bujinkan claims.
Yeah, the art that was taught to Ueno Takashi by Kenwa Mabuni. According to http://www.bartitsu.org/index.php/the-martial-arts-of-bartitsu/
I don't know of any historical connection between Bartitsu and Defendu. If you mean Defendo (Combato, etc. - it gets murky), the style created by Bill Underwood, he said that he'd received his first jujitsu lessons as a young boy from former Bartitsu Club instructor Yukio Tani; however, it's unlikely that Tani was a student of SFR. Beyond that, as others have already mentioned, the SFR dojo that Barton-Wright studied at between 1895-8 appears to have taught a different method than that which is currently claimed as part of the Bujinkan lineage.
Chick at .13 and later without the mask, has the skills, the rest... I was all excited to check out a Bartitsu demo recently, until at the last minute the practioners all pulled out and a few Krav Maga folk tried to fill in, very lame. Would love to see more of the lady at the start, along with other practioners. EDIT: Having watched a bit more of the vid. She is very good, I would really appreciate the chance to train with her.
The walking stick choke/takedown at 1:50 is very similar to one of the cane defences in our hapkido syllabus.
You might want to look a bit closer, bearing in mind that black leotards are worn by many members of the Bartitsu Club of Chicago, that there was only one female practitioner at the School of Arms event, and that she doesn't appear in the video clip until 1.35 ...
Ah my mistake. Defendu wasnt a Barton-Wright thing its Fairbairn and Sykes thing. The SDFR thing has been discussed prev in other threads and the same conclusion reached. Just wondered if there was other info from a different source.
Did/does Bartitsu have La Canne influence? Or Something separate?(keeping in mind theres only so many ways to swing a cane and crack a head)
You know one of the things I really like about bartitsu? Have you ever heard an argument over its history or origins?
