    Hi All,

I was wondering how everyone balances their training time in class between teaching and training yourself ?

We have been a closed club for a while now, in that we have had new students come and go but not actively looked to bring anyone new in for a little while, so we are about to open the club up to bring in some new students. That will mean going back to basics with anyone that does join as we start them from the beginning of our training syllabus.

This is a great learning exercise in it's own right to go back to the beginning and teach it all to someone new, but how do you all manage your training time ?

Do you rotate the teaching between instructors each week to ensure they all get time to teach as well as time to train themselves or do you base it on everyone's individual strengths on who teaches students the element you wish to train that week ?

How many classes are you running? Is it a full time gig?

At the moment it is just once a week but we have the option with the venue to take a second night if we ever wanted to. If we were lucky enough to have a surge of new students and the demand was there for a second session a week we would certainly start doing that.

But for now it is just once a week.

In talking to my instructor that balance between being a student and being a teacher is a tricky thing to maintain and tends to fluctuate.
He's going for his 4th dan this year and so is having to plan time for himself. He has started asking other blackbelts to teach the sessions so he can participate as a student. You can tell sometimes he just wants to get stuck in and hit pads himself without having to monitor everything. :)
He teaches full time most evenings and so tends to do his own training and fitness stuff during the day but then finds it hard to get to structured training in a class environment because he teaches so much.

Not sure I have any answers but the student/teacher balance problem has always been there I think. :)

db10, I suggested to Mods this be switched to the "General Martial arts" sub forum as it's not a CMA article. So if it disappears from this sub forum you'll know where to look for it.

As to the question,if class is being held only once or even twice a week then barring any individuals' extenuating circumstances I see no reason the instructors/assistants cannot train themselves outside of class both solo or getting together with each other. This is sorta a given for serious practitioners anyway.Instructors/assistants don't have to do a full work out in regular class.

Thanks I will keep an eye out to see if it moves.

I do practice outside of class already but do not have the room for two man practice outside of the class. Drills and forms are OK but you need someone to practice with ideally to get the most benefit from training. Which is why I was keen to see how others manage this during classes.

Maybe one day I will convert the garage as a home gym !

Home gyms sounds like a nice new topic all of its own!?

When I was teaching kungfu, there was another class a week I would go to at the same club. Often I would end up teaching there also being the most experienced.

Because of this I trained at 2-3 other classes a week at different clubs, it was great to cross train and also I got the training I needed to keep my skill progressing.
