Just to let everyone know, the Aikido World championships will be held in Leeds at the main university of Leeds campus sports centre on the 6-9th August. There is a course on the afternoon of the 9th which I think had to be pre-registered for, and the finals are in the evening (if the programme is anything to go by)

If anyone is in the area, please come along and have a look.

I'll be there, though no promises on how long I'll actually be in the competition :D

How is the competition judged and on what?

As there is no sparing or KO's is it on forms and techniques shown?

I'm sure this has been discussed before, but just in case,

We do have sparring, in the form of tanto randori and toshu randori.

Tanto randori consists of two 1.5 minute halfs, where one person has the knife for the first half then swaps. The person with the knife scores by striking the opponent above the waist (and below the neck!), while the person without scores by locking/throwing the opponent (Different scores for more effective/cleaner technique.)

Toshu randori has both competitors unarmed, with both aiming to throw the other.

Other than that, we also have the usual kata events where pairs are judged on their execution of techniques.

I have not seen it on MAP before

Sorry if it has been covered.

So are any knife attacks alowed, feints etc??????

Also the throwing is it more Jujitsu style grappling?

Keen as I have not seen anything like this.

The purpose of scoring for knife strikes is meant more as a penalty to the other person for not getting out of the way of the knife, although if they are not showing any care for avoidance of the knife they will lose additional points. The knife is only held with the blade end coming from between your thumb and forefinger, and can strike anywhere between waist and below the throat, on the front, back and sides of the body. Forward motion has to be shown as well to avoid it turning into a punching attack, with the knife being rammed into your gut. I've seen some scarily fast people with the knife, (although obviously its easy to be confident against a fake knife, but that is for a different thread ;) ).

Aikido randori is not everyones cup of tea (least of all the traditional aikidoka), as it can be fairly 'robust', but its nice to be able to try out the techniques from kata in an active situation.

If I get any good photos from the comp I'll stick them up when I get back

    Competition results

Spike, I hope this means I can come back now, as I got a bot of a result here!

I far exceeded my goals at this competition - all I wanted was to win 1 bout of randori and get through 1 round of kata. In the end this happened:

5-man team randori - won my fight, but team lost 3-1

Mixed team randori - Won my fight, but team lost 2-1

Individual randori - got a bye, won my next fight, then lost to a fairly handy japanese lad

Goshin no kata - Lost 3-2 in the quarters to Fujimoto & Nariyama(the son of our shihan) They went on to whitewash everyone else and win the gold.

Randori no kata - Revenge as we beat Fujimoto & Nariyama in the semi's, then went on to win the gold. Got an interesting statue that looks a bit like a storm trooper as a result! :D :D :D

Thanks everyone for your support, I hope I've done MAP proud, and I'll get some photos uploaded as soon as I can.
