Aikido is the best self defence

I'm learning Kali, but I do appreciate Aikido for its beautiful defense. No fancy movements, no wasting of energy, and the very important thing are to make you calm even in dire situations. Why did I say that even though I'm learning another Martial Art? It's because I do experience it before and better watch Steven Seagal on Youtube when he is doing an exhibition with the Russian. You will feel how elegant and deadly Aikido is.

I'm not an expert on Aikido, but I will say that most arts that look graceful and effortless when training with compliance end up a lot less so when under pressure. The aikido guys in the video below show some very scrappy techniques because the attacker isn't just standing there going with the defence, and as a result it starts to look similar to a lot of other arts.

Arguably that's one of the better videos of aikido I've ever seen, because fights just don't look clean and simple in reality.

    Nice clip but two thoughts
    1) he ate some big shots which without the head gear would have made things different
    and
    2) if you start looking like bad clinch work and bad judo when it hits the fan, why not start out training those arts first, and skip the fluff

No fights never look clean and simple but we can post countless clips of boxers in street fights who look like they are boxing, or wrestling pulling of specific takedowns and throws and lloking like they do in training, yet we are all still wiating for a similar clip from aikido?

I don't know, but anytime I hear "Look at Steven Segal" when it comes to the effectiveness of Aikido something in me cries.
Because usually the next point is: "Look at his movies to see how well it works.", which just is stupid argument, for obvious reasons.

It's not about denying that Segal was good or maybe not or about speaking Aikido down, it's just that I don't think the argumentation makes sense.

I'm allowed to attend guest training, during the summer holidays, with an Aikido-guy and aside from the fact that I found the movement to be surprisingly difficult  , it doesn't seem to be the best idea for self-defense.
On Tuesday we did a technique with a bo. It was fun, but it only worked, because the attacker would never let go of the staff - seriously, that's not the best pre-set, is it?
I just would have let go of the staff half way through (maybe rolled away; more likely for most people: Let go and step away).

    Was it fun anyway?
Aside from the frustration for being too dumb for the simplest things :D - yes.
Do I think it would work? Hm... if you'd train it for a long time, maybe. But I wouldn't count on it.
But boy, as for training movement and such - nice!

I love aikido, but -- no fancy movements? Hmm. Interesting perspective. Aikido is known for flowing arcs that most people would probably call "fancy movements."

And in fairness, all martial arts will make you calmer. Seriously, if you want to learn to be calm in a dire situation, take up boxing. Getting beat in the face is pretty much the pinnacle.

Yeah, I saw this a while ago and that was my big take away from it... as well as overselling the "hardcore" aspect of the attacks.

He just didn't have good entry tactics or awareness of striking. He's a big bloke though, so could probably get away with that against most people. I seem to remember he worked doors at some point.

My take away and what i suaulyl take away from these things is, bring a knife or a big stick. :p

Ya, he forgot to the get off the line. At 2:38 when he got clocked, he was starting his sweep thing right in front of the attacker, rather than stepping off line. And at 3:07 when he ate another one, he again was standing in front of the attacker for his entry, rather than standing to the side. Getting off line is fundamental to aikido. (shrug)

This may well have been the conclusion after viewing the video, i.e. that aikido doesn't always look like aikido when you add pressure into the mix. In other words, it's easy to look flowy and graceful when the other guy is compliant and predictable, but when things are less so it starts to look a bit like how a number of other martial arts train.

It would be nice to see, yes.
