After GSP does the comeback of the century, he has effectively and immediately vacated the MW belt he took off Bisping. Due to a diagnosis of Colitis. GSP states he doesn't want to hold up the division "out of respect for the fighters". So which now means that Whittaker v Rockhold is now on for the Undisputed MW belt, aimed for UFC Perth. Thoughts? It'll be interesting since, Rockhold has been quite vocal lately how the "UFC doesn't know what it's doing and making no sense in creating title fights" Wonder if this has changed his tune lately? Weirdly enough, will Kelvin Gastuelum be in the runnings? Since he has a decent run and KO'd Bisping (albeit on a quick changeover).
GSP was never going to defend that belt. My guess now is he shoots for 155 belt. He could win fights there. He won't fight Woodley because GSP would get merc'd and Wonderboy might shool him too tbh. At 155 he could beat Khabib, Ferguson, Diaz, Conor, RDA, Cerrone etc. Long liat of winnable fights if he can make the weight (which he has stated he can).
Should be allowed to shoot for another belt after vacating one for medical reasons? I personally think he's a putz so I don't care. But should that not take away any eligibility.
I think we're all entitled to an opinion. Years ago he had some separatist supportive comments, for that alone I wouldn't like him. But I just don't care for the guy. Something rubs me the wrong way. He may be the most super duper dude around.
No need to start so defensively. I was simply curious. I'm not a GSP fan. But I don't have any strong dislike for him though. I just was wondering what would cause you to call him a putz as that seemed like significant dislike. At least he makes someone feel something... No small feat for potentially the blandest combatant in professional MMA!
If he goes back down against Woodley, it'll make their money. However, I do agree, there would be that stigma of GSP being healthy enough to keep hold of the title or for a sustainable run. Like Cain Valesquez who could easily be the best HW Champ if he only wasn't so injury/ill prone. I wouldn't really agree in him getting another shot either. However the argument would be "he never lost it" etc
You need to take into account the specific medical condition. He has Ulcerative Colitis. It will affect how he eats, trying to gain and maintain the weight at 185 is what apparently made him sick. I am sure there were other factors too, but he got sick trying to eat and gain weight for the 185 weight class during his training camp. His intestines can't handle it. He may or may not be able to manage the illness at a lighter weight. But being able to fight at a lighter weight while not at 185 makes perfect sense. As for earning any fight in any weight class, he isn't like McGreggor. He defended his WW belt plenty of times against the best in his division at the time. He has nothing to prove. And he never held up a division while he pursued other fights. When you defend your championship as often as he did, THEN you earn the right to pick fights when nearing the latter days of a stellar career. Many, myself included, consider him the GOAT. He most certainly is in the top people to consider for that.
