The is a karate tournament coming up and me being very enthusiastic I would like to take part , has anybody got any good kumite tips? And what do you think is more important in kumite defense or attack? Thanks
What style of karate are you competing in? I'm going to move this into the karate forum as it's karate specific Mitch
Have a gameplan that plays to your strengths and stick to it. Prepare yourself well physically, and let that help settle the nerves. Learn loads and most of all enjoy it! Be sure to post up any pics on MAP, and best of luck
Thank you Mitch ,great advice , as you are aware im pretty new to karate , so coming up against a more experienced karate ka is quite daunting . I suppose a lot for me will rely on instinct , I have noticed when I’m kumite in class I have wasted energy in some useless attacks , so maybe i need to learn more composure , and learn when to strike .
I'm sure there is a good sticky/article here on what to expect in tournament. Generally it's good to find out how the day will be run. My first fights were at BCCMA events, and I came over enthusiastic warming up as soon as I got there at 9am, by the time my fights were on it was 3pm. As you are new, drill what you do know and get someone to video if you can, you'll learn plenty from the experience.
Relax your shoulders and don't forget to breath. Tiredness is the killer in martial arts tournaments.
