That's what I was wondering, when I just read the response; you beat me by a few hours.

I mean: It's supposed to be a system to protect, it's supposed to be fighting system - whether or not one likes the term "martial art" for its heritage, it's pretty much what it wants to be.

    I mean, from your site:
    Italics by me.
It's calling itself a fighting style after all!?

I don't think you're getting the religious angle.

For them, you might as well call it "the arts of Baal" or "Satanic arts". Mars is a pagan god, and even worse a Roman one, so they will have nothing to do with the term "martial".

Then that somehow lead to the fallacious claim that their fighting style therefore cannot be compared to other martial arts. It would seem their martial ability is not the only thing lacking, unfortunately.

I get the angle - I just think it's stupid, asinine and redundant given how many other things come from "pagan" sources

Yeah, that in itself might be alright, but not the way they try (and fail) to use it as a get out of jail free card when it comes to criticising the crap training and technique in their videos.

Oh, I do get that, I think.

But since they call it a "fighting style" themselves... A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, or how do you say?

Well, then that's a problem you've got beyond just these jokers!

Yes, well Shakespeare would say that...

I could come with a German proverb, but translated that doesn't make any sense.
And you know what I mean with that, so where is the problem with that sentence?

There's no problem. I'm not sure why you think there is.

    Oh.
Okay, no problem then after all.
Thought there was a misuse of it or anything

No! It was a silly quip: if I would say "a rose by any other name...", I'd be taking credit from Shakespeare. You used the phrase perfectly! :)

Come on. That post is "utter bilge." You can do better. Ehav4ever has been nothing but polite. You owe him due kind by explaining, based upon your years of escrima, what you don't like about the knife defense in that YouTube post. You know -- be a teacher of escrima instead of a mean guy shouting insults from a keyboard.

    That's a good point, aikiMac.

You could write a series of books on what is wrong with that, but I'll start with one major one: the attacker never withdraws his knife in order to attack again after being parried, but instead lets it hang there politely until the instructor grabs the wrist or hand. Most people will stab multiple times, not just stick a knife in once and hope it did the job.

    I owe him nothing

Equally I fail to see what else can be contributed more than has already been put elsewhere in the thread on the empty handed portion - it would also be "pearl before swine" given the amount of linguistic gymnastics and apologetics that he has entered into in "proving" the historicity of his art in the face of all evidence to the contrary by the actual "teacher"

So crap mechanics, poor distance, uncomitted attacks, freeze in the spot "corpse uke" and an inability to recognise the dynamics of a knife based encounter

That's all he is getting as he clearly doesn't want anything else

Might be worthwhile for all the other people who will end up reading this thread though.

You are right that most has been said in general during the thread, but I do like pulling something productive out of a seemingly worthless situation...
