Wearing a sword how does it dang? Gets in way?

So I have not worn a sword but I have worn a straight baton. When I walk it dangles and hits my leg and moves about. It gets annoying. I am wondering how a sword feels to wear? Does it do the same types of stuff? I definitely can see why police have swapped to extendable batons and such easier to carry.

    Thanks

It depends on the sword. If you mean a katana, for example, that is held in place by the obi in such a way that the handle points forward and the tip backwards, which means it doesn't hit your leg. I imagine that much the same happens with scabbards from most other types of sword, as it wouldn't be much good carrying a weapon that you would trip over when trying to move!

If your not in the police, why are you wearing batons? are you a security guard?

I've worn the PR24. The rigid scabbard is definitely better than the ring for the exact reason you mentioned. Far prefer an expandable. As for wearing a sword I tried it out for a week at the cottage once. Outside is okay but I understand why the Japanese have the shoto for indoor wear.

I was having fun with martial arts stuff in my area where I live.

Can you post a picture or a link to a rigid scabbard for a baton? I am assuming they make ones for straight batons. All I have ever seen is the ring.

If your playing dress up in a public area, you may bring unwanted attention upon yourself!

I sure I've had targeted adverts on MAP with a similar tagline, maybe more single men/women/clowns/vikings/grandparents, and less martial arts stuff.....
    But I digress....

Why is this even an issue? You guys are apparently assuming I live in the UK or such. I live in America and in a state called South Dakota. The only real law we have on weapons is you need to have a permit to conceal carry a pistol.

Carrying a baton is fine. I have a friend that carried 3 swords with him downtown and no police stopped him and no one said anything.

But the most important part I literally ment where I live as in my home and back yard and neighborhood. For a few hours for a few days total.

Not saying I have not done stuff like carry weapons in public and such but I did not do that this time.

Do you guys have any relevant info on my topic or do you only want to tell me how to live my life?

Ahem, getting back to the OP's actual question -- my only experience is with the Japanese sword (bokken and kendo shinai) also, and what Aegis said is how we did it. The way sword slides into the obi/belt, it physically cannot bang on your leg. I've watched iai guys with metal swords that they pull out of scabbards, and it's exactly the same -- which is not surprising at all, because the other swords are supposed to mimic the real thing. A scabbard in the obi/belt the way they do it, will never hit your leg.

Swords are a pain to carry around. If I were to carry my longsword about in a hypothetical world where such things were normal, I wouldn't gird it at all. I'd carry it in its scabbard like a walking stick, which was done historically IIRC. It makes it much easier to draw as well. I'd keep my messer on my hip though, as they're short enough, with a buckler hooked over the scabbard to put the sword through to keep them as a unit.

Do you ever try to carry on your back? The drawing skill will be different.

If you carry on your waist, you can push down your handle, this will move the tip of your sword up.

Bio mechanics, if you mean to draw quickly and effectively froma back carry unless itsont he short side of things you cant do it. Just feel like poinitn it out as its basiclaly impsosible to pulla longsword out of aback sheth and would only be a to the battlefield carry thing.

No culture that I'm aware of ever carried swords on the back to draw from, as it's basically impossible unless the sword is very short. If it's short, then a hip draw is better anyway. One could in theory sling it over the shoulder like one does using only one strap of a backpack and drop it to the hip to draw. I seem to recall someone saying the Norse did that, but it could be nonsense. It would slow the draw by adding a second step. Perhaps on a long march it would be OK, but not when expecting trouble.

Celts did if I recall, but it was not exclusively how they did it or even the norm
