Hi Magpie - have a look at the link I posted to the Abernethy forum on the 'certain styles' thread. There is a strong case that Pinan has been mistranslated.
Are there 24 steps in Shotos Nijushi-ho? Are there 54 steps in Gojushi-ho? Aren't they actually named as such because they are mathematical "factors" of 108? Gary

I just watched nijushiho on you tube and counted only the actual steps, not techiques, i.e. - instances when there was a distinct change of foot position. I counted 25, but possibly depending on how you define a "step" you could get 24.
good point moosey. we should look at different versions of nijushiho/niseishi and count the literal steps and see what we find
Its a shame that there isn't (apparently) a correlation between the number of steps in the kata and their names. In much the same way as Shotokan kata have been modified to start and finish on the same spot, I was expecting Nijushiho to have been molded to exactly 24 steps. If your in the mood for counting steps - does the Shoto version of Suparinpei have 108 hands? Gary
