I've been likened to a badger, which I'm sure is worse than any of those.

You can punt a badger of course.... :)

For weapons look at someone like Demura for how it blends - the problem is people see it as separate; it's not :)

Like Panatukan it's an extension of the hand and vice versa.

Doesnt that technically come under the HEMA title (Yes i am going down the semantics route) and is it evena real one? I literally know nothing of that past it was the martial art in Sherlock holmes.

2: Noted. Point on crime, not much could have happened to it, motivation maybe and a rise on group attacks maybe, intnet may have changed drasticlaly but that doesnt change on how to avoid or deter it. I may not be aware of some trends in crime, but acid attacks are new and rise of group ambushes is the only ones i know of.

3 Yes, for short. Kendo maybe not because Katanas are hard to find and expensive to get and who wants to wreak antique, but a polearm is a great weapon should you not be ambushed at close range and/or in a enclosed space. (and pray to your maker they dont have a Pistol) :p

Can i get a breif on what Koryu is? Just in case wiki or google leads me astray. Koryƫ (martial arts) - Wikipedia Page i got.

And as has probably been made obvious i am a support of carrying weapons for self defence. But as its not a political thread, abstaining from going on a 3 mile long text rant on it. :p (and yes i know, offensive weapon and all of that)

Actually, i may just PM you about the crime thing, i kind of get the feeling it would crash this thread, or you can PM me.

(this was wrote as other replies have been made)

What Animal simile can i have? Sloth? Bear? Penguin? :p

    Neither are new.

Acid attacks were fairly common in Georgian and Victorian Britain.

    1. Semantically possibly, but in reality no - Bartitsu is it's own thing as is HEMA and it really refers to 14th Century to end of 17th
    2. socio-economic issues have massively changed it - peer pressure has added to that too for "pleasure" based crime as an addition too. It is VERY different
    3. no it's not - seriously, it isn't. And a polearm is next to useless

Now im going to look for anti acid attacks in treatises and hope it doesnt start with throwing a servant in the way. XD

I'll have to disagree with you there, as military sabre is very much one of the HEMA arts and it was practiced by various armies into the 20th Century (peaking in efficacy in the 19th). It's probably fair to say that HEMA is any European martial art more than about 100 years old.

Interesting, but military sabre had a (relatively) unbroken line did it not? HEMA to me has always been reconstruction - possibly an erroneous view in fairness

If it IS that broad then the applicability is actually REDUCED simply because the variation in the styles and techniques gets to be huge

Absolutely, and that's exactly why I said what I said earlier in this thread. You get to have a lot of fun with HEMA, but with many clubs you will try to pick up a little of a lot rather than focusing in on a very small area of study.

Dont they sub devide themselves on culture/era/treatise? I wonder if there are any which only teach the knife fighting treatises.

You'd be better off with FMA

What exactly do you mean by "for pleasure" crime?
Unless you find yourself in formation defending against cavalry. Anywhere that doesn't have that as a regular occurrence at chucking out time must be soft.

Happy slapping, worldstar, "just because", gang intiation et al....those crimes done for gratification rather than gain

I'm from Manc - we eat horses for breakfast up there

    Literally - in sausages usually

WHY DO YOU TEASE ME SO!?!?!

I don't think crime for gratification over gain is new. Rape, murder and manslaughter without profit were common in medieval Europe. Gangs and initiations aren't new either.

Filming it is new, obviously, as is the ability to find strangers to attack, rather than knowing most people in your community. Violence as a way to let off steam is at least as old as written records though.

Hmmm... watched those Karate videos. I get the transfer of empty hand to weapons or vice-versa, but I've still yet to see sensible techniques and functional weapons training in Karate.

Essentially because you probably don't understand the karate nuances either - most outside dont in fairness. I seriously recommend JWT and his sessions for that and SD in general - he will lift your game and awareness tenfold

I don't need to understand the nuances, I just wondered if there was any video of alive training with realistic attacks in Karate out there. There's an abundance of such material for FMA, I was getting the impression from you that the same is out there for Karate.

Aside from that, the little bit of partnered tonfa stuff didn't impress me technically. I wouldn't want to rely on techniques that require faith in the structural integrity of my opponents weapon! The sai stuff was hard to judge because it was just a guy standing there waiting to get cut up

My point exactly...have you seen karate? Then you have seen karate weapons - you just might not have been aware of that because most people separate the empty hand and the weapon
