If You Were a Man
by Kinjiro Tsukasa
If you were a man,
Would you have the same liquid emerald eyes?
Would a mustache appear where black whiskers now lie?
Would your hair be soft and black like the velvet fur you now bear?
And would you still thrill at the touch of my hand?
If you were a man,
Would you still greet me at the door each night?
Would you show the same undying affection?
Would you be the same agile fighter, your knife-edged claws replaced by ten shuriken?
(Such skillful ukemi; graceful kaiten, fearsome tobi, gravity-defying shoten no jutsu!)
Most of all, if you were a man,
Would you still love me unconditionally?
Or would a human brain constrict your heart?
Would you look at me, think 'Too old', 'Too ugly', and walk out?
I wonder about the man that you might be
But perhaps it is better that you remain as you are, and love me as I am
