How Cold Can it Get?
by Kinjiro Tsukasa
How cold can it get?
Days grow short
Leaves tumble down
Lawn grass recedes
Into hard-packed ground
How cold can it get?
Frost forms on glass
Snow covers the world
Icicles hang
Sharp daggers, threatening
Bone-cracking chill
Furnaces labor
Parched skin fissures
Ice freezes dry
Snow squeaks underfoot
Cars struggle to start
Gales pierce the heart
The world contracts
Colder still
Cold so fierce, it swallows all sound
Leaving curtains of silence draped all around
Suffering people
Clad in layers of fleece
Shrunken and small
In their protective gear
They all but disappear
A bitter year
And colder, yet?Say it isn't so
Spirits almost broken
Defeated by snow
At the last minute
A warming trend
Not a moment too soon
Signals winter's end
