Wankan

Does anyone have any insight into this kata? It's without a doubt the stangest form outside of Chinte. It is I think the shortest kata in the shotokan cirriculum, and (seemingly) one of the most basic. Yet it is one of the highest kata in the system. Your thoughts?

it's completely unrelated to the Matsubayashi Shorin Ryu's wankan. It was probably made up by someone in Funakoshi's lineage, perhaps Yoshitaka.

My guess is, Yoshitaka Funakoshi picked this one up from shito and shotokanized it. It's a nice kata and the shito verison is only slightly different.

And the kung fu stylest will say, 'That doesn't surprise me. All of Okinawan karate is kung fu that has been 'te-ized.'

For real, I've been told by many kung fu folks, that Okinawan karate is very hard style kung fu...

peace

i hear that in wankan karate you develop one very strong arm and wrist but the other stays underdeveloped. you also tend to keep your guard "low"
