I have been studying haidong gumdo for about a year and a half now, and I love it.

I have not studied Hapkido, but I do not see how it would benefit your hapkido training-it is a separate art on its own. It does emphasize more upper body strength than TKD or many similar arts, so it might benefit your hapkido from that perspective.

I ran into someone a while ago in another online forum who was studying haidong gumdo somewhere in Oz. I know that doesn't help much, but I will try to find his info and get it back to you if I succeed.

We have been learning some partner drills that my instructor says is " Gumbo " I believe He may have called it Haidong Gumbo but no promises My ear for foriegn language is fuzzy . They drills are very unique, have real life application , and flow like water with practice .

We have learned two excercises , one parries/deflects/redirects a straight punch as you attack the puching arm on the bottom inside and passes it to the outside before striking back to the face and the other one parries/deflects/redirects a straight punch to the inside while striking the tricep then striking back to the face ... yes its hard to explain excuse me ...

Fun little drills , My instructor says we be learning more soon . I have doubts as to the value or place it has in traditional Hapkido or authentic Hapkido . But as for selfdefense and My progression as a Martial Artist is has helped with sensitivity , body awareness , and hand eye cordination . It also seems to help the TKD people in my class get used to being touched and roughed up a little .

Haidong Gumdo is a Korean Sword Art (Translates as East Sea Swordsmanship). Hand and foot techniques are only really taught at more senior grades.

For Info worldwide, see the Federation Website: www.hdgd.org

In Europe, see www.hdgumdo.com

In the UK, see www.haidong-gumdouk.com

There is an Australian federation...not sure of the web address though - best looking at the World federation site.

It's a great system - very challenging. In terms of it complimenting other styles...I'd say not really as it's a sword based system, so something you do more for the art, although it is very good conditioning work for the whole body and very good discipline for the mind.

Ah HA !!! I knew I was wrong !!!!

What I was speaking of earlier was part of a Filipino style that takes you from striking range to grappling, disabling in this case the arm , as you enter . Which Filipino Martial does it come from ... I have no clue .

My instructor Called it "Dumog" which somehow in my head I confused with Gumdo .... same letters different order .... * blushes * darn you dyslexia ...

For the record we are doing some katana work I wouldnt claim we are learning "Gumdo " we dont have enough time .....

This is wild!!

I know this has nothing to do with martial arts, gumdo, or dumog, but dyslexia always amazed me. My daughter once took an entire spelling test for class, where half the words were written on the front of the paper, and the second half were written on the back--she only got 50% correct. She spelled all the words correctly, just that the words on the front were spelled left-to-right, and the words on the back were spelled right-to-left.
