Apparently it's a game-fu fighting style practised by Mai Shiranui. Combines elements of traditional japanese dance with hand-to-hand, tessenjutsu and pyrokinetics. Play Fatal Fury or King of Fighters, and you'll see.
Also, Shiranui-ryu is/was a form of Kenjutsu I think, but a lot of information I find leads me to Rurouni Kenshin sites, indicating to me that it really does not exist. Last edited by oni_sensei; 25-Dec-2004 at 04:55 AM. Reason: Minor alteration. |

The hidden art of swordsmanship
See the Shiranui-Ryu is a nickname of a style called Gensai-Ryu. It is a style created by Kawakami Gensai. Its style is drawing a sword with one hand, with right knee in front and slightly bent, with left leg extended backward so straight that the left knee almost touches the ground. As soon as drawing he attacked in extremely low posture. His speed was god like..slashing and clinging to victims of his next spree. Famous for slicing through Kuma Shouzan in broad daylight with his unique, lightning-fast Furanui style of Kenjutsu(his Shiranui-Ryu). Whether he was responsible for other assassinations is still a mystery. After the new era was brought in, his ideas about isolationism conflicted with that of the government’s, and he was tried on false charges and executed in the fourth year of the Meiji era.The style was said to die along with him...this is what Rurouni Kenshin is based upon ... ~Successors are rumored~
