Masaaki Hatsumi Sensei was taught by Takamatsu Toshitsugu O'Sensei. Masaaki is the founder of the Bujinkan, which teaches a collection of 9 ryu. I'v never heard of "masaki ryu".

Do a google search on masaki ryu, I had never heard of it before myself but seems to be quite a bit of info on it.

As far as I can see it is some kind of made up Ryu.

(no insults intended to anyone if this is a genuine ryu!)

The Kusari Fundo was not part of our Ninpo arts, given to us by Takamatsu Sensei.Hastumi Sensei was tought the use of the wepon before he even met Takamatsu Sensei.Masaki Ryu was the name of the system where he learned the use of the Kusari Fundo. My question is what was the name of the person who tought Hatsumi.I will meet with some people on 25 Feb 04 and find out.Once I find this piece of the puzzle, there is a link to some other people in our art. There is a man who only has 3 students I am looking for him, if you know what I mean?

I always thought that the kusari fundo techniques were taught to Hatsumi sensei by Takamatsu sensei.

I did a Google search and came up with this url:
http://www.shinkendo.com/nawa.html

I can not vouch for the authenticity of this site or if the info is accurate. Its open to discussion if this is true or not.

This is a quote from the page:
Mr. Hatsumi was apparently an early student of Nawa Sensei prior to training with Takamatsu Toshitsugu is a martial artist, historian, writer and advisor to the Japanese Government's NHK T.V. Network, considered to be a leading authority on ninpo. In addition to ninpo, Nawa sensei is also talented in the arts of Masaki ryu manrikigusari, Masaki ryu kusarigama, Edo Machikata jutte and Torinawa Atsukaiyo (jutte and tying cord) among others. Mr. Nawa currently teaches at the Masakikai in central Tokyo.

Has anyone else heard of Nawa sensei?

Isn't Soulfly the band Max Cavalera started after leaving Sepultura? I haven't heard anything, can you recommend a few songs?

Yep, I love Sepultura, Arise is a great album, as well as Chaos AD.

What do you think of the new stuff since Max Cavalera left the band? I think its different but also great.

Yumio Nawa information

Hello

I have some information about Yumio Nawa, that I would like to pass along. Nawa Sensei is the 10th generation headmaster of a martial tradition known as Masaki Ryu. It is the only system of dedicated Japanese chain practice remaining today, and focuses on the practice of the manrikigusari (short weighted chain), kusarigama (chain and sickle) and jutte (iron truncheon).
My father was the very first student of Nawa Sensei in the 1950's and the first non-Japanese to receive a Menkyo Kaiden from him. Nawa Sensei real name is Nawa Sadatoshi.

thank you,

Hatsumi sensei was taught the manrikugusari (Kusarifudo) by Nawa Fumio, soke of Masaki Ryu some time during the 1950's

Nawa sensei passed away a few years ago

Gruzanski can be excused for thinking that Hatsumi was a student of Nawa due to his inability to speak Japanese and his single talk with Nawa.

In a 2000 issue of Hiden magazine Hatsumi went through his training experiences outside of Takamatsu. Masaki ryu was not mentioned. After that, I asked a few people inside the Bujinkan and in the Masaki ryu. If Hatsumi was a student of Nawa's, he was the ultimate ninja because no one was aware of it.

What I did hear is that they shared a lot of information with each other due to their interest in ninjutsu. They also were on a lot of the same sets for TV and movies. But I can't find any reference to them training together as teacher and student. And some of the sources I asked are pretty close to the subject matter.

If I may ask, is that 'sharing' with Nawa Fumio where the use of the Kusari-fundo came from?

One guy I trained under in Japan said that he thought Hatsumi got the idea of using a short rope from watching Nawa. The techniques in the Bujinkan are supposably based more on longer flexible weapons like the kyoketsu shoge and also based on a rock wrapped up in one end of a towel as an improvised weapon that can be easily carried when in disguise.

I have to stress that this was an opinion given me by a Japanese shihan and not Hatsumi, my memory is not perfect and we had both been drinking like fishes prior to me sneaking in the question. There might be some huge errors with what I say so don't take it as gospel.
