Why is it that there is so many schools that teach martial arts, but rarely you can't find any filipino ones? I'm an Aikidoka but I love the filipino martial arts, why will no one learn them and teach them. I would love to learn them.
Are there any schools in Kansas that teach them?

One reason is that the schools usually do not advertise themselves.
Second, the filipino martial arts are so exotic that most people have never heard of them.
Third, it is overshadowed by more popular martial arts. In fact, takwondo is more popular than arnis (eskrima or kali, its tha same) here in the Philippines.
The final reason is the most ugly. Racism. There are people out there that feel that only nurses and domestic helpers come out of the Philippines.

I agree...they're quite hard to find.
I haven't yet found a Sikaran or Yaw Yan school here in Long Beach...or people who've actually heard of the said arts, for that matter :p

If only people would realise that the art used in the movie "The Hunted" was a filipino art then it might raise some eyebrows. As well, and I'm have no clue, having more Qualified instructors aoynd would help. Untill I found this site I had only read one or two pages in a martial arts book about the filipino martial arts. I would also like to learn any of the filipino arts, but have never seem any around where I live.

I'm sure that plenty of JKD dojos do some sort of Filipino arts, sometimes a specialised class, and it's usually kali.

I think the scene in the Bourne Identity movie (starring Matt Damon) where he goes one on one with an assassin...wasn't that a Filipino Martial Arts style? I don't know what it was. Let me know if anyone knows. Thanks

here's what I gathered about the Bourne Identity FMA scenes:

a teacher from the Inosanto Academy put Matt Damon through a course on FMA but someone else did the actual fight choreography, probably based on what Matt could do.

the handle of count dukou's lightsaber pistol grip is based on a filipino blade, the barong. Anakin skywalker's double lightsaber style was a lousy Largo Mano.

Batgirl and Nightwing use arnis too.

Yup. Never even scared Duku with a redonda. Even a faster sinawali move would have been more entertaining.

Same here. I want to see a mean Dark Side guy with two short lightsabers using nasty sinawali.

it does show how formidable saber techniques are.

They are economical and graceful yet still powerful. Christopher Lee rocks with the saber

I wouldn't say that they're dying. I'd say that they're just now gaining any amount of popularity in America - for good or bad.

    It's a relatively small community - but I'd say that it's *very* alive ;)

In my opinion traditional filipino martial arts are diying..... this can be seen in the gatherings at the Luneta park, many of the experts who used to come no longuer do.....

I think modern/commercial fmas are growing due to good marketing skills of peoples who know how to promote them and the ignorance of students.... students unaware of traditional training are easy prey for drilling artists-instructors who don't know how to fight....

They will take the easy way and look for flashy systems based on useless drilling instead of looking for the old masters who still have the knowledge but would teach them the hard/proper way....

How many peoples are calling themselves punong guros, grandmaster or even datu today? This is really shamefull and an insult to the master of the past.... In Mindanao, Cebu all these peoples would be laughed at.....They are bringing the arts down.....

I checked yesterday, in fact all of the hand to hand combat was Kali, so if movies keep using the fillipino arts, maby people will learn and it will grow
