Is there such a thing as a "Bo Staff"? What are those words, if they have a category, that are misued per: Chai tea (Actually Chai translate to tea) so this is like saying "Tea Tea" PC computer (PC means personal computer-used out of context to mean IBM based machines) "Personal Computer Computer" Bo Staff (In martial arts a staff is a quarter stick-bo is the Asian term and translates the same) "Stick Staff"
No such thing. But I don't look too much down on it when used in Western parts, particularly when the audience is unlikely to know what 'bo' means. It’s better than ‘staff that’s usually about but not always and depends on the user 6 feet long’. Oh, and ATM machine.
Don't be that guy. "Bo staff" is fine. Yeah, it's redundant. But it's harmless. And only redundant if you know about this stuff already. Besides, I think it makes sense for Western martial artists, particularly in speech, because we have another archaic weapon that sounds precisely the same. It's a very innocuous clarification.
George Carlin used to say a lot on how we mangle the English language. His commentaries are hysterical. My favorite: "Undisputed heavyweight champion. Well, if it's undisputed, what's all the fighting about?"
My personal favourite is "it goes without saying that... " And then they say whatever supposedly went without saying.
Good Lord! How about Katana sword then? :bang: Redundancies are redundant. If you know better, don't use 'em. Simple.
Meh. I don't find that particularly offensive either. Though, as I mentioned before, the bo clarification makes a bit more sense to me because we have an archaic weapon called a "bow" in English already. So "bo staff" makes it immediately (and pretty efficiently) clear what we're talking about. Honestly, I don't think this qualifies as an issue. If we FMA folks can live with "eskrima sticks," you guys can live with "bo staff."
Well for Japanese disciplines, it's simple really; A 6' staff is a bo or rokushakubo. A 4' staff is a jo. A 3' staff is a hanbo or tanjo. Bo staff makes me think of Napoleon Dynamite. :bang:

Me too. But I count that as a good thing. I see what you guys are saying. I do. I just can't get that riled up about it.
there are quite a few places in the uk called tor hill, or veriations of. tor means hill, there are even places that translate as hill hill hill. and dount forget mount fuji, which is mountain mountain.
I use "x" sticks, where "x" usually is either rattan or polypropelene! But I agree a lot of the apparent redundancies are just to clarify things - for example PIN Number makes sense because Pin is something used on a noticeboard or in dressmaking I did once see an American book refer to "Lake Loch Ness" though which made me chuckle!
