Sanchin Breathing
Has anyone heard of Sanchin Breathing, and if so, is it similar to the TanJon Breathing style we practice? I've read that Sanchin breathing may be dangerous to people predisposed to, or those that have (wa), hypertension. Does anyone know if TanJon breathing may affect the body in a similar manner. I'm enclosing a link to this story I read concerning the matter.

Hi
yes, we use sanchin breathing while doing Sanchin kata of course! ![]() The breathing is an essential part of doing the kata, as essential as the stances and the other movements. You cannot have one without the other. If done in moderation [like everything else] there is no harm to the body. I am not familiar with tanjon breathing or its effects.

Can't seem to open this article, but if it is the one I think it is it is incorrect.
Sanchin breathing consisists of abdominally controlled breathing. I have read articles stating that practitioners breathing in sanchin will blow gaskit or something. It is my contention that this opinion has been formed either from a missunderstanding of sanchin breathing or the author has wittnessed incorrect sanchin breathing. Proper sanchin breathing does not stop the flow of air to alow for a hypertention risk situation. It is a deap breath in through the nose and exhaled through the mouth with your lips slightly parted and the tongue on the roof of your mouth. The pressure for the exhale comes from your diaphram, thusly strengthening your abdoman. Katas utilizing sanchin breathing ie. Sanchin Kata are performed with the entire body in a tense posture where all muscles are tense. The article I read suggested that sanchin breathing was like blowing into a high resistance resepticle creating the danger of a hypertension inducing situation. this is just not the case for the type of breathing I have learned is sanchin.

hi, i take isshinryu karate, and at my school, this is how i'm taught sanchin.
1. for each technique, you relax the body as much as possible while taking a deep inhale through the nose when you move your hands to the starting point of the technique. (say you've just done the lapell break at the beginning, you do this first step as you bring your hand back to the chest to chamber the first punch of the kata) 2. once there, you begin the technique (say that first punch i used for an example in step 1) and from the time that technique begins to the time it ends, you do the MAXIMUM amount of tension you can manage through your entire body. you let out an exhale through your mouth (whatever comes most natural in accordance to your tension, so for most people, the breathing is somewhat like someone trying to bench more weight than they can handle) and this exhale takes the same amount of time that the technique does. these two steps are applied to every technique in sanchin. my question is, does the maximum tension of the body during the release of the techniques pose any detrimental health effects. now, since i'm sure i'll probably hear at least both yes and no at least once in my answers here, my bigger question is this: does it seem like i should do a no muscle tension or relaxed tension (muscles tightened, but i can still talk while during the kata) when i practice it most of the time, and only do the maximum tension when required (only a few times, all of which involve belt tests)? please, i'm only 16 and i want to do this kata right, and i want to do it without knocking 15 to 20 years off my life, so any answers would be appreciated here. |
