Some nice videos I found of traditional stick arts from western countries, most people would not suspect there are so many. Some have become not much more than dances (often a mean to hide it, now an end in itself), others retained their martial capacity (and before bear gets upset, none of those are canes ): Juego del garrote (Venezuela) http://www.youtube.com/v/4TT6fCYXxNQ&hl=en&fs=1 Juego del palo (Canary islands) http://www.youtube.com/v/5KlwT_RttiI&hl=en&fs=1 Kalinda (Trinidad and Tobago) [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q0KRiYNHT3E"]Zulu Stick Fighting, Kalinda, and Kali in Austin, TX - YouTube[/ame] Jogo do pau (Portugal) Short stick http://www.youtube.com/v/ze1SpAUk1zI&hl=en&fs=1 Long stick http://www.youtube.com/v/0I7FHG-XOgM&hl=en&fs=1 Shillelagh bata, Doyle family style (Ireland) http://www.youtube.com/v/REvuqH8cRJc&hl=en&fs=1 Bastone Siciliano or Liu bo (Italy) http://www.youtube.com/v/1_xm2uniUJI&hl=en&fs=1 Bâton français (France) http://www.youtube.com/v/_7GaXnwxoqo&hl=en&fs=1 Capoeira stick (Palo de Brazil?) http://www.youtube.com/v/wes7tzh66ts&hl=en&fs=1 Zulu stick fighting (okay not really western but still interesting) [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qb-LV705f3g"]Athletes vs Zulu tribe - BBC - YouTube[/ame] Thatib (Egypt) Probably more entertaining with scantily clad womens , but that's the more martial like I could find. South Africa is in line with Germany, Poland. Sweden and Italy, it's as in the west as they are, signed Mr. Picky
There's singlestick of course, popular throughout the UK and was still being used as a training tool for sabre by a Scottish Olympic Fencing coach back in the 1990's.... I'm currently teaching a Highland version from the 1790's, along with the Irish cudgel.... [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUI2gFO3-mc"]Scottish Martial Arts - YouTube[/ame] Louie
