Question Escaping a choke hold.

Having taken a few Judo classes and experiencing a variety of different choke holds, I have to admit that it's one of the more unpleasant situations to be in. Often, if the person really knows what they're doing, it can be only a matter of seconds before it's lights out.

So, I was just curious how, in accordance with your particular martial art, would you go about escaping a choke hold.

Of course, there are many different ways in which a person could be choked, so just pick one and go with it.

I like to go with the basic reach behind, grab them around the neck and then bend over and throw them over my shoulder. This is for the sleeper hold.

If someone really knows how to do a proper choke hold, you are not getting out of it. I would volunteer my own ass to prove this point because I know how to do proper choke holds. I dont care who it is, if anyone let me put them in a choke hold they would not get out of it until they woke up a few minnutes later. The best way to escape a choke hold is not to get put in one.

Forward throws from a neck choke, in a real situation especially a sleeper choke, risks a broken neck. You would be better off hooking a foot and falling back w/ all your weight into your attacker.

As DeLamar.J said, good chokes are hard to get out of quickly. One advantage that you have, that generally doesn't come out in class, is that your attackers hands are busy and yours are free for full strikes to groin, ears, eyes, etc. But you have to be quick!

Even then, if the person who has you in the hold is somewhat tough at all and can take a few decent shots, you will be out before you can hurt them enough to let you go. I was tought that when you get a hold on someone you are 100% dedicated to it, and not to let go under any circumstance until they are out. As the sleeper is applied, you can jerk your victim violently, snapping their body in different directions. That will make it very difficult for them to strike at you. Each time you feel them loosing strength, you snap and jerk harder and harder while squeezing with all your might the entire time. Very brutal but effective.

If you are caught in a choke, and do one of those things you are taking a REALLY big risk. He will likely be very annoyed when you do go to sleep....

In my case, I wasn't assuming just coratid chokes. And, even so, I've visited schools that train on some questionable coratid chokes from the side that in a real struggle probably would catch a lot of neck muscle at first and buy you some time.

if its choke from the rear, I'd try and bite down for dear life on his forearm. If its too quick, then Im going to have to say I'd prefer to just not get choked to begin with. Most good fighters would have pounded you a bit before trying such a thing, so reacting to it wouldnt be much of an option anyway. If a second opponent enterred the fight by trying to apply such a choke from behind, I'd bite down like an alligator until I feel him start trying to pull his arm away.

on the streets?? how to get out of a choke in the words of my shihan..."grab their jewels and turn the dials as if you were watching t.v or listening to the radio...any man will let go." I think thats effective enough, no? Grabbing a man's nuts and twisting, pulling/crushing hard enough will be unbearably painful to any man alive. Training in traditional jujitsu also strengthens the grip over time... and like others have mentioned, you can also bite a chunk of their arm off...On the streets anything goes...

You film it and make a pretty penny selling it to the gay porn film market

I actually started this thread after arguing with someone (on another forum) about the same thing. This person also argued that getting out of a properly executed chokehold in near impossible.

I have to disagree. If one has the proper training and resorts to savage methods (most notably crushing the testicles), I don't think any man could continue to hold on (okay, I'm sure there are some ,but not most).

Admittedly, one would only have a few moments to get the person to release their hold, and more often that not, if the person is trained in a grappling art, the choker is probably going to win out. But I still don't think it would be impossible to escape.

Just a wild guess, I would try hitting him as hard as I could with whatever part of my body happened to be free. Would that work?
