Combat Submission Wrestling?
Hey,
The school I'm looking at for Muay Thai classes also teaches "Combat Submission Wrestling" and am just curious what it is exactly. How does it compare to BJJ? Is this just a generic name for any kind of grappling that involves submission, or is it a set style? Thanks |

Apparently not.
Best bet is go in and see if the guy knows what he's on about by taking a class. "Combat Submission Wrestling" he may be talking about Grappling in a self-defense kind of area. Comparing it to BJJ however.............well if you want a BJJ like style, go learn BJJ.

Here's a link to the school- http://int-kickboxing.com/index.shtml
I think the main guys name is Jerry Huffman or something, but when I went for my free MT class some other guy was instructing. Its weird because they list it as both Combat Submission Wrestling, but they have "Brazillian Jui Jitsu" in the description. On the schools scheduale they also list it as Combat Submission Wrestling hmmm. Maybe they cant actually advertise it as BJJ since they werent certified or something? |

Sounds a bit fishy. Submission wrestling is basicly Jiu Jitsu with no gi. This not so subtle change affects the strategy quite a bit (no collar chokes, spider gaurd, or any other move that would involve gripping the gi), but the basic positions, holds, chokes and subs are the same. Never heard of "combat submission wrestling" maybe it's what this particular instructor finds to be highly applicable to self defense. Either way cavet emptor when someone advertises something no one else has ever heard of. Be well.

Sounds like generic grappling to me.

No offence meant Sliver, as I know you were trying to give good advice to be wary, unfortunately, just because you haven't heard of it and no-one has posted a reply on an internet forum doen't mean its either fishy or that no-one has heard of it. Someguy, I would only say that if you ever want to find something out about a club, go to the club itslef and ask the instructor and see how it works 1st hand. That way, all your questions can be answered and you can make your own mind up as to whether it would be what you wanted or not...if not, then nothing lost.

Yup, CSW is Erik Paulsons system, and an excellent one at that.
