At UCI there is an official Suio Ryu Iai Kenpo Study Group authorized by the 15th Generation Headmaster Katsuse Yoshimitsu Kagehiro.

In addition, the Suio Ryu Iai Kenpo USA Shibu is located just a few miles away in Anaheim, California.

Katsuse Soke will be coming to California in August and several of the seminars will be held at the ARC (Anteater Recreation Center).

For more information on Suio Ryu Iai Kenpo, please visit our web site at:

That looks interesting too, but isnt the kenpo a close combat hand-to-hand martial art? I would take it but I'm already training in shou shu, and I just want to learn technique and skill with the katana.

In this case, you are using the wrong definition.

Katsuse Soke, serving the Suio Ryu Iai Kenpo as the 15th generation Headmaster has explained "Iai Kenpo" in this manner:

"Firstly if you break the characters down, 'I' (lit: sit/place in time/place where one exists) as we understand it means an environment or a threating moment in time which forces the practitioner into action.

The 'ai' (lit: harmonization/blending/ to meet) signifies the practitioner identifying the threat and applying the most effective action, reactive or proactive, to it to achieve their aims.

In our tradition we train in the use of the sword to achieve those aims. This being the 'Kenpo' (lit: methods/teachings/skills of the sword)

Therefore, Iai Kenpo = the use of the sword to effect the most beneficial outcome from any threat or action of our opponent or arising from our environment."

Please go to the above listed website for additional information. When you get to UCI, please feel free to stop by.

hmm that sounds good, my fault for not doing enough research sorry :P

I'll definately stop by when fall quarter begins.

Edit: actually this is really interesting, do you guys actually train at uci or do you goto the dojo in anaheim?

what dates is katsuse soke coming on?

Also, I just realized you said "kenpo", I had thought you said "kempo", which is why I was confused

Mostly UCI Students train at UCI since their Student Fees pay for the ARC (Anteater Recreation Center). For non-UCI students it gets a bit expensive.

The rest of us in the area train at the Anaheim Dojo (along with some of the UCI Students) although we all get together at UCI a couple times a year.

Katsuse Sensei will be holding seminars from August 19 through August 24th. Several will be held at the ARC.

All the information regarding the seminars and the registration forms are posted on our website as a PDF download.

Suio Ryu Iai Kenpo

Here is a link to some photographs taken of Katsuse Sensei at the Paris Taikai 2005.

Select the "Suio Ryu" link.

Katsuse Sensei is the gentleman wielding the Kusarigama in the later photos.

Those pics are awsome, the kusarigama is such a sweet weapon.

One question though, howcome the convention in august is so expensive? $50 for one day? Is it more like a presentation/introduction or is it actually a long training session?

We train approximately 8 plus hours a day during the Gasshuku. No matter how you calculate it, the cost is a lot cheaper than a trip to Japan.

Thats definately true..lol

Wouldn't an 8 hour session be alot for a beginner though? or is that actually how you guys train your art? I spent about 6 months training in my art 4 days a week for about 2 hours each day before I did an 8 hour session. That way I was able to get most of the basics before doing intensive training.

Dont get me wrong, I think it would be awsome to train 8 hours a day, thats the kind I like

When your Headmaster is in town you take advantage of every minute you have with him.
