i guess we all have our favorite counter attacks, but the best counter attack is the one that works in the given situation. sometimes it might be a dwit chagi, sometimes a dollyo chagi, sometimes a neryo chagi... it depends.

the worst thing is to stick to one thing that you like. i know a guy who in competitions loses his fights because he simply loves punching and instead of countering in a meaningful way he exposes himself to the risk of being KOed or hit and goes for the punch and doesn't score in most of the times.

as far as dwit chagi is concerned, either with a jump or without it, i find it very useful when being pushed to the corner of the tatami. both ways of performing the dwit chagi is something i do and score with at competitions in the above given situation, of course if i see that it'll work.

a lot also depends on your opponent, his/her speed and technique. if your opponent goes often for one kick, then you can easily counter attack by seeing which part of his/her body is usually free.

one of the mistakes competitors do after doing a dwit chagi for example is that they stop after doing it and thus are open for a wonderful counter attack, dollyo chagi let's say.

if your opponent is not fast at connecting his/her two kicks let's say, you can always move a bit to avoid the first kick and then simply interrupt his/her combination with a counter attack, which you find suitable at that moment. i use the neryo chagi whenever i can and score almost always with it and KO in a high percentage of the fights.

one of my students kept using neryo chagi because he saw how I KOed my opponents with it several times, but the thing is that he can't do it the way i can, so my point is to stick to something that'll work and you feel comfortable with because a competition is no place to experiment.

no, a neryo chagi is an axe kick. you bring your leg up above your opponent's head and drop it on the head or face with your heel or sole of the foot.

Generally the simplest attacks work the best. The fastest way to any given point is what? Mathematicians say....it is a straight line.

I'd also like to offer some other advice: counters are excellent, but, if you can, even better than counters are interceptions. An interception is when you strike your opponent just as they're about to strike you, i.e. when they're chambering. Because their mind is fully concentrated on their attack and they've left no more room for thoughts on defense. They're commited to their strike, and that is the perfect time for you to strike.

My favourite counter is either a step in side-kick or a flick turning kick. As was said above, it all depends on the situation.

Good footwork is essential for counter attacks, you need to move out of the way of the incoming attack and rapidly attack back. Often its easy to avoid the incoming attack, but having sufficient speed and balance to counter attack is alot harder.

This is why techniques like turning kicks, back kicks and jumping variations of these are so good for counter attacking as they are easier (IMO) to perform immediately after or even within an evasive movement.

This is true. Good thing you mentioned it. Your counterattack not only depends on the situation, it depends on your positioning. Just like when you throw a combo, like a back kick that follows something like a front kick--it's easy because your foot is placed a certain way, making it easy to do the back kick. So do like Taliar said, work on footwork, cause sidestepping can place your foot just right and without even thinking, you'll perform a counter like butter.

my favorite is when some one is punching(charging) block wiht yur left hit it away and round house to the head or stomic.
anthor one if if there kicking hit there leg down and normal kick ot the face
and another good one(i won a match with this one) if there normal kicking high block it so itll lift them up a then side kick them into the stomic, itll stop them dead in there tracks

yes, that is great under the condition you are faster than your opponent.
