I think hwarangdo has a section of its curriculum called gun shin pup that deals with ninjutsu-type stuff, i.e. stealth, camouflage, etc.

Ancient Korea suppoosedly had ninja-like warriors called sul sa, but how reliable that story is I don't know.

Yeah, sorry it is. I always get those two mixed up, mexican cooking and Korean guerilla warriors.

Anyways, I was just checking up on my terminology and found this article: http://www.hwarangdo.net/master/sulsa.php

To be honest, I doubt the historical research, but apparently the art should be referred to as "un shin bop", so scrap what I said earlier.

The sulsa training of hwa rang do is given only to the US and Korean military, the sulsa was what started the ninja over a thousand years ago.

First, Sulsa, like Hwarang, is based on fantasy... a made up martial art. Ask any researcher, they will tell you the same thing. Ninpo (Ninjutsu) has ABSOLUTELY no link to Sulsa. It was merely a copy cat art created by the current leaders of the Hwarang Do as a means of cashing in on the 80s NInja Boom.

My thoughts exactly. Nice to have them confirmed.

I don't know why the hwarang myth persists, since there's no mention in historical records of them being warriors. And when you take the Samguk Sagi story that they were actually young boys ordered by the king to cross-dress and wear make-up, the whole thing becomes rather ironic...

I'm pretty sure from me old days when I were a Taekwon-Do lad many moons ago, that Hwarang was the name of a pattern in the ITF system.

It is indeed. Hwa Rang Tul (pattern) is named after the Hwa Rang Youth Group which originated in the Silla Dynasty in the early 7th Century.

I don't know about that art.But does anybody think there could be a connection since Sensei Takamatsu spend some time in Korea. And koppojutsu uses some quite unique leaping techniques.I cannot resist the impression that it has something to do with the ancient Korean Tae Kwon (not Tae Kwon Do).

Do you mean Taek Kyon? Which was the ancient Korean art of "foot fighting", the forerunner to modern TKD.
