Shaolind0wned plus texas area mcthrowdown report epilogue

So taebomaster and shadowdragonx (from bullshido) came to visit my gym today.
And we go over to the local shaolin do place, two blocks away. They (SD) have a pamphlet that advertises one of their Sifu's "fearsome prowess in sparring".
I ask to spar the guy and they say "well the principle of our school is not for you to go and challenge our guy to spar." So I ask them if I can spar ANYONE there and they say no.
In retrospect I was really nervous and probably too nice, even thanking the guy for his time.
But anyway, 0WNED.

Afterwards I show TBM and SDX some techniques, we do some alive drilling, then we spar. Before anyone asks, yes, me by four different armbars, but that's not the point of a mcthrowdown, IS IT, YOU JERKS?!

Then we all have a contest to see how long we can go vs gracie_austin (phil cardella) before getting tapped.

None of us last more than two minutes.

This surprises you?

Not a lot of schools will accept any kind of challenge that some random passerby throws at them. Two reasons:

1. They may actually be complete wusses who don't know what the hell they're doing.
or

2. They don't want to have any liabilities (in CA, anyway. This is lawsuit heaven) should they detach your jaw from your face.

Either way, people don't like being challenged. After all, most TMA schools will teach you to stay away from fights as much as possible.

Now, that said, try doing that in the school of Sanuces Ryu Ju Jitsu or Long Beach Tang Soo Do Academy, and we will give you your match. Win, we will be happy. Lose, we will happily congratulate you

Sorry, hedge, but until you actually spar and win, you didn't 0wn anyone.

 

They got 0wned. They backed down from a challenge. That is very much 0wned. Beforehand I extended them an open invitation to come to our school's open mat, then waited for several weeks. Noone ever came.

If they didn't wanna spar they shouldn't have advertised the dude's sparring abilities.

 

Watch the movie "To Kill a Mockingbird" and tell me which guy gets "0wned" in the scene where the guy spits on the other guy (don't wan't to ruin it, go rent it!) You can 0wn someone by NOT kicking their ass!

 

Read the book. It's better.

 

TKAM is a literary classic, but that's not germaine to the point. I'm not a drunken redneck and none of you ugly trolls are scout.

This is an issue of truth in advertising. These guys were advertising two things:

1) Their instructor's prowess in sparring.
2) The utility of their style for self defense

I asked them to back this up. They refused. I am a 150 pound, 9 month bjj WHITE BELT. The fact that they refused to fight ME says quite a bit.

3. They don't feel like fighting a pointless, ego-checking sparring match against someone who runs around issuing challenges and claiming to '0wn' anyone who actually wants to avoid a fight.

 

I'm guessing if they had kicked your ass, they wouldn't be owning you on MA forums.

I could have 0wned Bruce Lee. Serious! I could have kicked his butt in his prime! If he and I got into a fight every day for a year, one day, at least, I would have bested him. But he prob. would have told me to go away. You can't win EVERY fight, it's a statistical fact. I could 0wn Chuck Norris, Steven Segal, Jackie Chan, Jean Claude Van Dam, Sonny Chiba, you name it! They all would prob. have their security guard "escort" me to the hospital, but if they accepted, every day for a year, I'd get them on a bad day.... Yeah I'm that good!

 

would it be out of place to say that, in a way, they "owned" you, by not rising to the challenge? In the way that if someone on the street said "you do MA? Come on then, I'll fight ya now" and you turned them down, showing self-control, you have "owned" them, by being able to control your aggresion.

Why is it that someone who hates the "will it work Da STr33t" mentality is using street vernacular (i.e. 0wned)?

Where was this implied challenge? I didn't see anywhere they boasted of superior fighting abilities?

Here's the difference between their school and yours: They are about lifting people up and keeping the ego in check. You seek to tear others down so that you will seem greater.

I think they did a great job and showed admirable restraint.

Tell you what hedegehogey, if you're looking for people with a like mentallity and want to prove your fighting ability there is a place where they take all comers. It's called prison. If the you and the Gracie's really want to prove your ultimate no holds barred superiority. Survive a five year stay in one.

Take that attitude and survive without ending up someones punk and I'll admit BJJ is the ultimate fighting art.

 

Sometimes I think hedgehogey is a bit arrogant and immature, but sometimes I think he is going the right way.

I think it's fair enough that he can ask to go in and spar with someone when their sparring prowess is advertised and he is allowed to come in and train. Sparring is after all an important training tool. However, I think it's silly to come on a public MA forum and say that you "owned" someone because they "pussied out" of a sparring match. His fault lies in the fact that he thinks he is somehow "one up" over these people.
