do you call brazilian jujitsu a “brazilian” art? is boxing “american”?

every country can have is own tradition on a martial art. there is nothing wrong with that. jeet kune do is an american art–and the chinese can claim it if they want. filipino kung fu is unlike most chinese styles, but its a chinese origin style. same as in malaysia, and in vietnam…

So in other words, muay thai, silat and karate along with judo/bjj are all filipino martial arts.......

look at the blog to see what i'm saying. is karate can be an american martial art, silat or western boxing is a filipino martial art

another example is sanshao and yaw yan

Modern boxing is English, with roots in Ancient Greece.

Muay Thai is Thai, but has roots in Cambodia.

Silat is Indonesian, although it is more of an umbrella term, and there are different styles from different regions.

Karate is an Okinawan interpretation of Southern Chinese martial arts.

    Judo is Japanese.

BJJ is a derivative of judo from Brazil.

None of them are Filipino, and none of your links work.

Chinese Kung Fu (if you believe the legends) comes from Indian yoga.

Like all things, evolution + culture are the main culprits. You can look at 1 "style" then compare them being practiced in different countries and see the variations. Eventually they will change and mix as to that specific teacher's needs and ideals.

But they have to change and mix before they become something different, before that point, you can't claim cultural ownership of something invented independently of a culture.

Play fast and loose enough with your definitions and definitions quickly become generally useless. You either need to be more specific:

The Sikaran of GM Geronimo Meliton is a Filipino interpretation of karate/taekwondo based on his background in those arts and traditional arnis.

Or you need to be more general:

"Karate" generally refers to Okinawan/Japanese styles of empty hand and their derivatives.

Play the middle ground and what you get is a meaningless hodgepodge.
