Although in the formal and correct sense prostitution is money for sex, there are so many facets to it that the definition needs expanding IMO. This is a very small facet of it at the low end, but still falls under the general banner I am not even saying it is morally wrong...questionable yes...but it is effectively selling oneself for reward

So they're just escorts? Am I über un-sensitive or does anyone else not see the big deal? Yeah their gifts are a bit extravagant compared to the norm but an escort is just an escort, hell I've mates who've done it for a bit of extra cash, I doubt I'd turn down the work given what they earn.
I haven't seen the programme but it's also being discussed at more length on IC. It's not exactly new, guys seem to be more down on it than girls, possibly because of the CPE. In the case of a friend, it's not because she couldn't meet someone nice, my bf at the time was completely disgusted at L but having been on the receiving end of almost zero commitment LDR where it's quite possible the guy was married, getting gifts just for spending time wasn't so weird.
I am not sure what CPE is, but what happens when guys do this sort of thing is that they are inflating the "cost" of dating for every other guy. On the other end of the spectrum, women on some base level dislike promiscuous women because they lower the cost of dating. That is why I believe men are down on these high priced hussies and women are down on whole sale hoochies. In most cases I blame the guy and girl equally. I don't thinks it's right that these women should be expecting these extravagant gifts, and I think the men that buy them are not really men at all.
I don't see the point in buying a woman a gift if she's not going to put out in return. Unless she's a close relative, of course. I suppose the wife is a gray area.

It's kind of a warped version of the systems of patronage you got in more feudal societies, although if I'm honest, I'm probably not intrigued enough by the parallels to watch the show.
