I assume you are talking about the American medics and aid workers who have been infected. A better question would be 'should a country ever even consider turning is back on its greatest heroes?'
Funny you mention that. I watched a MIchael Moore documentary and America did exactly that with the volunteers for 911 - they wouldn't treat them for various problems caused by dust inhilation and some diseases that developed from that. Don't know the name of the documentary but Michael Moore eventually got these guys the medical attention they needed from the most unlikely of people - he took them to Cuba and the Cubans healed them and gave them prescriptions which they paid for. I'm pretty sure America isn't the only country/government guilty of this. Baza
Under quarantine, yes. Or no but that would involve a lot more effort with sending support and supplies. I don't think countries should just close the door in their face but neither do I think there shouldn't be some precautions taken until you know they're clear. Although I always thought Ebola was like a slightly suckier version of the noravirus. Now I've found out how dangerous it is I'm a bit more wary about it all
I don't believe that they should. Those people chose to go to Africa and fight Ebola, they knew the possible consequences. There has been an Ebola outbreak in the US before this and they were unable to contain it, thankfully it was a benign strain. Check out the book the "hot zone" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hot_Zone
That's the thing though isn't it. The courageous choose to be courageous. Cowards are just born that way.
It's their choice though.Bringing them back to a crowded US is exposing an innocent civilian population to an unneccesary risk. While all the African nations are bravely quarantining themselves and closing their borders the US government are risking exporting Ebola to the whole of the western world.
Ebola requires contact between people. The 'civilian population' is not being put at risk. The CDC knows what they are doing.
Any fear is borne out of ignorance and cowardice. There is no risk of Ebola spreading to the wider US from these patients. The CDC has a specialist unit set up and they know (more than probably any other institution on earth) how to deal with Ebola patients safely. I just find it disgusting that people would consider refusing these heroes the best possible medical care.
I couldn't disagree more. When has a government agencey ever proved themselves competent. The population are at risk. I wouldn't want my children put at risk because some incompetent bureaucrat got it wrong. Look at it as a numbers game or a logic problem. What is the upside? The upside is that you save a couple of people who chose to put themselves at risk. What is the dowside? a possible global pandemic that wipes out much of mankind. Even to calm the population you would have to take the second option. Look at the panic caused in London with a possible Ebola carrier.
If you want to look at it as a logic problem then consider that quarantining them in a western country with modern facilities would offer scientists a much better opportunity to study the disease and come up with possible treatments.
Ebola has been known about for 20 years. The "Marburg" strain only came about because an expert inadvertantly infected themselves. A way to gain imortality I guess. You only have to look at the mess that the US and to a lesser extent the EU has made in Ukraine to realise how incompetant our leaders are. I have no faith in them.
Except they're not the ones in direct contact with Ebola, the treatments, management or anything else. Just saying.
They were examining it in a laboratory!! ...and yet that still happened to Experts. This could be far worse. I suggest that you read the book the "Hot Zone" to get a better idea. When somenody gets infected it becomes a whole different ballgame, they may not want to die in an isolation ward and go walkabout or visit family.maybe jump a plane to somewhere. What you have in the world today are huge population density areas that are interconnected internationally, the possibilty for a catastrophe are immense.
So? Just call it quits then? Should we stop studying cancer and aid/hiv as well? Absolutely false. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marburg_virus Also if you look at the list of incidents, I would say they have done a decent job of containing the virus.
