i realize that the best way to learn is through a teacher but there are no places that teach kali where i live if i were to learn kali what would be the best dvd or book to learn from ?
I don't think you can get the GM Danny Guba DVDs anymore, so maybe the fundamentals DVD from our own Pat O'Malley. http://www.eskrimador-supplies.com/DVDs.html The Battlefield Kali series from Burton Richardson may work for you. http://battlefieldkali.com/
https://m.facebook.com/profile.php?id=139142122822569 You have a silat club nearby your teachers bjj class. Silat is a very related art to kali, and there fb profile shows lots of knife work.
Frank Evrad of Kali majaphahit has a extensive online library. They also do lots of seminars and camps. Your also encouraged to travel to their home facility. http://www.kali-majapahit.com/online-training/ Met one of their practitioners and he does very well. Of course he trained for a year at their main facility.
The Pekiti Tirsia Kali DVD set from Tim Waid is pretty good. He goes over the basics of footwork, knife, solo espada/baston, etc. They are probably worth your time depending on what system you are interested in and your goals. As for goals, if you are looking to get a feel for the basics, and get some drills to work on them, his DVD set would be a good fit. If you are looking for a catalog of techniques to collect, they would not be. There are many DVD sets that work well for those looking to pick up a few specific techniques here and there. The Lameco series from Felix Valencia would be a good bet, along with many others. Another DVD set to consider is the Lacoste-Inosanto Set from Rick Tucci as well as the one from Dan Inosanto himself. I have also heard good things about the Lameco set from Dave Gould, but have not personally seen it. Goldstar video is a great place to check out martial arts DVD's. You can rent them to see if they are what you are looking for, and then buy them if they are. All of the ones I mentioned above are available on that site. https://www.goldstarvideo.com/styles/Arnis/2 https://www.goldstarvideo.com/styles/Escrima/63 https://www.goldstarvideo.com/styles/Filipino-Arts/13 https://www.goldstarvideo.com/styles/Kali/22 https://www.goldstarvideo.com/styles/Panantukan/109
