Is this the video your talking about?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rvaQDafwps

Because I don't see anyone getting knocked out in this video, and that shot he takes is massive, so it appears that they are not in fact hitting with less power at least in this fight.

With regards to selection and confirmation bias, that is a possibility. I have limited data to base my assumptions onI would still like to see an actual knock out in nippon kempo though. Check out this video of kudos knock outs:

The closest I could get are these two summaries:

    http://www.intercollegiateboxing.com/2013/03/aiba-bans-headgear/

    http://www.centrechatbleu.com/competition/AIBA_Headgear_Analysis.pdf

The fellow who did the study is Dr Charles Butler. Maybe someone else will have better luck tracking it down than I did.

Also on the topic of head injury.

To the OP; if you are serious about wanting to understand this, read the most recent studies on the subject. Youtube is not a reference.

I've read a few studies on accumulated head trauma. It would be interesting to measure biomarkers of different martial arts, thai boxing, boxing mma, nippon kempo, kudo, and see if there is a difference in these biomarkers associated with head trauma. But sadly I doubt anyone will do that study.
