My kids and I train in both taekwondo and Philippine martial arts. I'd like to get some kind of mat for the floor at home where we can practise. We don't do a lot of takedowns (but I've been eyeing off aikido so that might change). :) Our house is currently carpeted. We're military and move a lot, so we need something that is versatile enough to fit lots of different flooring types and room sizes as we never know what we'll end up with from one year to the next.

    Ideas?

There's a really good advert on MMA matting that Meerkatsu reviewed a while ago. Looked good but pricey

I'd recommend 1mx1mx1" jigsaw mats. For stand up, they'll be fine. You can mat a big enough area to practice techniques with 15-20 of them and they'll be relatively easy to transport. If you want to do takedowns, you might want to consider 40mm mats instead.

Jigsaw mats will be cheap and flexible to different space requirements.

Plus you should be doing takedowns and throws as part of your TKD :D
