Arm Wrapping

    Arm Wrap

    When your opponent punches at you, you wrap his arm (or arms), pull him in, obtain a clinch, and ... You can convert a striking game into a grappling game after that.

    What's your opinion on this strategy?

    I believe the arm wrap is a fundamental movement that needs to be learned and practiced.

    With that said, I have a lot of reservations about actually teaching it to be used in a real world situation. The arm wrap, as done in many cases, violates a few principles of combat. The first is that when not done correctly, it causes you to lock up with the opponent and lose mobility. Losing your mobility is not good, especially when there are multiple attackers and weapons involved. The second principle it violates is to always protect your vitals. When done on its own, the arm wrap can leave the area under the armpit open, this can be a lethal area to be stabbed in by a blade.

    IMHO, the correct use of the technique is to keep the elbow in (so that it protects the area under the armpit), and rather than wrapping the arm completely, the elbow is grabbed by BOTH hands. This is executed as an arm break immediately on contact to stun the enemy.

    The grabbing the elbow with both hands I do like, but some people don't like using both hands to counter just one of the opponent's arms because that leaves their other hand free. If this is an issue, I prefer just using the one hand to pin their arm to the side of their body while striking with the other.

    In any case, maintaining mobility is really important.

    Over hooks and under hooks are fundamental grappling skills, if you can't do them you can't wrestle, and if you can't wrestle you can't fight.

    Even boxers get pretty good at arm wrapping - the boxers clinch is basically the over under position. It stops the other guy hitting you. I don't think it gets more fundamental than that lol.

    Arm wraps are fine if the opponent is polite enough to let you wrap their arm. However if they have any sense they will be moving away or attempting to wrap your arm at the same time. To get around this minor inconvenience we often combine a wrap with a strike. The strike momentarily impedes the opponents movement giving time for the wrap to be applied. We have a lot of under hook wraps which have the downside of briefly exposing the head / neck to the attacker. We spend alot of time playing with stepping, striking and using the other hand to cover / trap to compensate for this.

    The over hook monkey trap is a simple quick and surprisingly effective.

    A lot of the newer (older?) karate kata bunkai and applications use limb control like this.
    A very common use for Knife hand block for example is to parry a strike/push/grab, warp the arm and slam your forearm across the attacker's neck.

    Really youknowwho? Using movie fu to illustrate your point? With all the real clips you seem to have at your disposal? :confused:

    I find that very disappointing.

    I'm personally a fan of arm wraps. They're very effective against longer weapons (say machete length) after a parry. They're good after a Steyer's beat vs a haymaker etc.

    Tying up with folks is not always a good idea. However, considering how much time I spend on HEMA and Judo I'm likely to do it reflexively. Might as well do it with some semblance of skill.

    To that end, even though I'm a lefty I box orthodox, since Judo is dominant side forward, and half my training is Judo. Just hedging my bets. Having a stiff left jab isn't so bad either. Circle to my left and it will hurt more than you think it will.

    There are things you're just going to do because that's the way you fight. Sometimes it's not worth training those habits out, with the time being better spent doing things you do reflexively even better. If you're an arm wrapper, then perfect it so that you can't possibly screw it up.

    For those of you that regularly use the arm wrap or are a fan of it, other than it being a fundamental and important skill set, are there any particular lessons you use with it.

    For example, when we teach it outside of fundamental movements (i.e., over hooks), the first lesson is to attack/strike the throat of the opponent using our other hand before wrapping to stun them.

    A second lesson is to establish wrist control or trap the wrist with the wrap. I like to keep my elbow down and trap the opponent's wrist between my elbow and side. The only exception is when wrapping deeper in and allowing the opponent to pull their arm out. When the arm is being pulled out, their wrist can be trapped.

    I also like to cup the elbow (meaning palm on their elbow while I grab their tricep), followed by a quick elbow break.

    Do others have preferred methods of using the arm wrap?

    If your opponent wants to wrap your arm, instead of trying to pull it out, you should send your arm forward (give your opponent more arm than he can handle), and wrap his shoulder with an under hook.

    When applying "arm wrap", I like to get 3 points control on my opponent's arm as shown in the following picture.

    1. left hand hold on the elbow,
    2. left armpit control the wrist,
    3. right hand control the upper arm.
