Let me preface this by saying that I think people have forgotten what kind of fighter Gina Carano is. I tend to suggest they watch this to remember:

    [ame="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4gXGTj0FPCY"]Gina Carano - 8 Fights - All Strikes - Deadly Strikers - YouTube[/ame]

That said, I wish Gina would get some tune up fights before she fights Rousey. I however still think people underestimate her.

And I also argue who ELSE in the division deserves a shot? Who is getting passed over for this? Other then maybe a rematch for Sara McMann or Miesha Tate I just don't see anyone who Rousey can fight. (Leaving Holly and Cyborg out for a moment as I think both of them are going to get their shots.)

It's crazy not to give Carano a warm up fight and honestly the fact that Carano might do it suggests she's not taking it seriously. There are no sporting reasons why this fight makes sense.

Tbh unless they get Kyra Gracie and build her up it's largely academic anyway.

Cat Zingano. She was supposed to get a shot before her injury.

Alpha Cat deserves it first IMO.

Gina will need more than a warm-up fight if there is even a remote thought of her doing other than breaking Rousey's last finish record.

True she was a great fighter - of that time. Women's MMA skills are farther along now, meaning the level she faces will be much better AND Rousey towers above these.

Not to mention, she's been out of action for 5 years. One year would be significant under these circumstances; five years... and its scheduled for this December, IIRC.

This isn't a fight, it's a UFC marketing event. Carano isn't going to win this fight, but she's not supposed to. She's eye candy. Might as well put Arianny in there.

All of UFC is a marketing event - its the whole point. Certainly there are some hardcore 'purist' fans, the kind of fans that don't hate clinch and ground work, but for the vast majority of casual fans Carano - Rousey is a brilliant marketing strategy that will make fans happy to spend their money on PPV and gate tickets.

Carano will have a fight on her hands making 135lb let alone facing a in-form Rousey the day after.
This is a stupid match up that takes mma further away from being a 'sport'.

MMA is a sport. Carano-Rousey is not sport. It is a porn parody of MMA.

I do wonder if you asked the average fan about Carano they wouldn't know anything about her except her butt. That is all I know her for too though.

I know that she cannot act to save her life.

    Nice butt though. :D

She was sort of the Pre- Roussey. As in, she started to bring Women's MMA to the mainstream. She helped build it. She helped make it what it is today.

Roussey says she was the person that made her want to get into WMMA. So, if it wasn't for Carano, Roussey might not have been in WMMA, and if Roussey hadn't met with Dana White, WMMA would not be in the UFC.

So, she is important in the history of the building of WMMA. Her accomplishments should not be overlooked.

But as pointed out, she has been out of it for 5 years, and the sport has evolved a lot in those five years.

I would like to hear her talk about rejoining it. See if she is just cashing in for the short term like many of us suspect. Or if she is back in full on for some time.

I don't think she has a chance against Roussey. But I wouldn't mind being proven wrong. And you can bet I will watch, even if I don't think she deserves the immediate title shot. So, I guess the UFC marketing works on me.

Really, who here won't watch it? I bet most of us will!

Oh I don't know. Maybe everyone in the division who's actively competing at the current time, regardless of whether or not they could do as well, deserves their shot before a former fighter gone actress who's getting pushed to the fore front for her marketability and is not even taking a tune up fight before returning for her championship match.

Most of the division would lose to Carano. The bantamweight division does not have a lot of good fighters. I think I can count them on less then one hand.

I don't see the point of this fight.. Carano has been out of the ring for how many years now? 2? 4? I don't recall. No tune up fight for her or anything? Must be a pretty good money fight is all I can think of.

    Yeah, I can't say I wouldn't mind seeing Ronda get Pacquaio'd

Doesn't matter. They are actively competing in that division now. They should be next in line ahead of a retired fighter that the company went out to get for marketability.

Whenever you have one fighter who dominates the way Roussey does, people say the division is weak. That isn't necessarily so. I think there are a lot of good fighters at bantamweight. They just aren't on the same level as Roussey.

Alexis Davis and Sarah McMann are both very good fighters. They just didn't look good in the ring with Roussey.

The great fighters have a way of making other really good fighters look not so good. Think of how Anderson Silva demolished Rich Franklin twice. But Franklin was a great fighter. GSP make good fighters look like amateurs in the ring with him - Fitch, Condit (exept for a minute or two) Koschek..........

I don't fancy her chances against any of the top 5, which is probably why she is being matched against Rousey straight away. Dana wants this fight to happen, but it wont if Carano can't beat a Kaufman or a Davis, so why risk it?
