If I was going to Brazil, what might I prepare for?

    - Don't wear expensive watch on your wrist.
    - Don't leave anything valuable in your hotel room.
    - Don't walk in any dark alley after midnight.
    - If a girl smiles at you, don't smile back. If you do and if you don't ask her for a date, it will be considered as insult.
    - When you date a girl for the 1st time, don't be surprised that she may bring her whole family with her.
    - Try to learn some Portuguese such as Do Do Ban, ...
    - ...

    Learn a bit of Portuguese.

Other than that, it's a big place. Are you going to a city, the jungle, both?

You will need to master this Portuguese phrase as you will need to use it again and again...

"Eu não estava olhando para ela. Eu te juro!"

prepare for the long walk to the US border, everyone else is going...

seriously, though learning Portuguese phrases would be the most helpful. Be familiar with the driving laws (if you plan on that) and the general laws that might be unique to that country:

@unreal combat: he said brazil, not thailand :p

@47: prepare for extreme extroversion. the average brazilian is very loud and extremely enthusiastic about everything. that's why the stereotype is to characterize them as party animals. whereabouts in brazil are you going?

well, if you go to bahia, you would probably be able to find some damn good capoeira if you can avoid tourist traps, as bahia is pretty much the mecca of capoeira.

i also have a friend who currently lives in brazil, albeit not in salvador, so if you need any specific info on anything about brazil in general, i might be able to get you an up-to-date answer in a couple of days.

Not sure which south american country my cousin was in, but the people she was staying with gave her some good advice...do not go for walks by yourself in the jungle, the natives will kill you.

and that is all I have on things south american

Try not to exchange too much of your US dollar to their currency. Last time when I was there, within 3 weeks, they had removed one zero from their currency.

If you get end up in a self defence situation, do not go to the ground.... There is no lava or broken glass on the ground in Brazil and everwhere is matted just in case they need to take down a unexpecting American tourist.
